Thanks, Riley... that looks promising! Is it a sure thing that the D3 and L1 screen are the same?

Owen

I put an 8gb SDHC card in my L1, formatted the card and am puzzled as to why the 'remaining no. of shots', in the viewfinder, only shows 99 shots. I shoot with raw capture enabled and the jpeg set to it's smallest parameters. I've estimated that the no. of shots remaining should show about 480. Am I doing something wrong, here?

WAD......ie..working as designed.

The Viewfinder counter is only a two-digit display.

The rear LCD counter will display the correct frame count.

I have gone past the 99 many times, the counter just resumes to 01 and continues, fortunately the correct frame count is embedded in the filename.

Thank you, very much! I'd have never figured this out on my own as I only use the monitor for changing settings and checking image sharpness.

I can say this one thing with authority... this is without a doubt the nicest digital camera that I've ever used! Viewfinder is unfathomably crisp. Metering is precise. Image quality is so Leica-like! Nirvana?... short of the M8, I think so!

Anyway, I can assure you that the FW v2.0 is a significant all round improvement to the in-camera processing of the JPEGs, colour temperature, sharpness and tone are all significantly improved and now seem to be a natural improvement over those from the D2.

Is this the general consensus - "a significant all round improvement to the in-camera processing of the JPEGs, colour temperature, sharpness "?

Just put in FW 2.0. Kudos to the software guys.BTW I had been running my old Nikon lens on my L1 with a Nikon-4/3 adapter. Works great. Bought it for $175, I'd like to sell it for $100. It is in perfect condition.

im not at all sure 8Gb is supported

Riley,

I'm not certain but I think that the D3/L1, and any other newer camera models which support SDHC, can use any of the SDHC cards from 2gb-8gb. My Transcend 8gb SDHC card is only the 'class-2' variation. I don't know how much faster the 'class-6' cards are over the 'class-2' cards, but for now the 'class-2' is probably fast enough for my use.

In case anyone may find it of interest... the lcd monitor on my L1 shows 497 available shots, using the 8gb card. That's with raw enabled and the additional jpeg image's parameters set to minimum size.

I'd like to know what others think, but that amount of images on a tiny piece of plastic makes me nervous! I prefer to swap smaller cards (2gb) when they are full. Sod's law says that the card will go pop when you get to 496. Thats a lot of work to loose.

Unfortunately, card failures are a reality. I've experienced it twice... both times with the same camera (Minolta f100 p&S) and with the same card (Lexar 256mb SD). So, I don't really know from my own experience whether the cards themselves were prone to failure or if that particular camera may have had a voltage issue that caused the failures. Since I've not had another card related failure since (2003?), I've pretty much just used the largest capacity card that I could find/afford. If I were actually shooting images for profit, then I'm quite certain that I'd be much more cautious and I'd probably be using smaller cards, too. My worst photo related loss so far was when my laptop died and not only took with it nearly every image that I'd ever shot with my first dslr, but also 7 months worth of icc profiles that I had created for that particular camera. Now that cd/dvd burners are the norm, I no longer have backup issues.

We all remember the days of microdrives. Seen a lot of failures on those little devils, and hard drives crashes. PC's and cards are much more reliable admitedly and backup is easier but, once bitten....

Owen - you can use the AF confirm focus on the L1 to help you with focusing. I usually set it to the center focus point hold down the shutter release slightly and start turning the focusing ring slowly. The light will lit up when you have it in focus. The L1 has better screen than the E-500 I used to have. Manual focus is not easy for 4/3rds cameras due to screen size. By the way Olympus lens 14-54mm is no slouch. I did comparison with the leica 14-50mm and they're almost identical as far as sharpness goes. The Leica lens is a tiny better better as far as clarity goes the Olympus is a tad darker in color/contrast rendition and I like them both. As Leica owner I'm always impressed with Olympus optics. They have a unique look to them like Leicas.

Charles, you are absolutely right!.. I received a Fotodiox M42-4/3 adapter today (another L1 and lens, yesterday) and I've been sucessfully manual focusing both the AF and MF lenses, using the green focus assist light... all handheld. Works very well! I still would like to get the Katzeye though as I'm used to manual focusing with one. With the focus assist I, sometimes, have to go back and forth because I miss the light coming on... in the corner of my vision.

  • 1 year later...

Has there been a firmware update for the 14-50mm lens that comes with the L1? Mine says V 1.0, would be interesting to know if there's been an update.

The V.2 body update seems to be a real improvement.

Ludwig, the L1 cannot use Leica firmware, that is for a different camera, the Digilux 3

*Do Not Use* Leica firmware on your L1, you will destroy your camera !
