Size of the M240 ... why do people complain?

I still don't understand why they bothered to put video into it. I've only ever accidentally triggered it and I've never actually looked at any of those accidentally-captured videos.

To me, it was a me-too feature and now I'm left with a button in a convenient location that I have disabled so I never accidentally trigger it.

I dont think video features have increased the weight. I would believe that its a bonus the CMOS sensor comes with - allowing live view and video capabilities.

Given that the camera is not ergonomic, yet I found that by attaching the strap to the right lug below the release button, the hand seems to have gained additional support and thus found a better grip on the camera. I would however suggest Leica use a more textured/tactile leather to dress the body.

I may also iterate that I find Leica’s philosophy of letting the user decide if they would like further grip, thus investing in the array of hand grips it (Leica) offers. But for people like me, I fervently would prefer a slick camera contours, that save me space and weight. However, once I get older, I will buy the most suitable hand grip required.

********

The sad truth about product development is that there is a continuous battle of brining the cost of investment down. And Leica’s strategy might be one maintaining as much external body from the previous generations for this purpose; an another plausible reason would be to maintain the same design with small iteration across the specturm.

And for the reason above, I feel strongly that we will not see the changes my fellow members are asking in the next M; though I heavily suggest they come with small, slicker hand grips.

If getting rid of video would allow Leica to make the camera as light as the M9 [...]

I don't think that is true. Perhaps a hardware or software engineer could inform us. Video comes along with the firmware which is weightless.

"because it's too big and heavy.

My gosh, I schlepped cameras for decades on the job, usually three at a time, and cannot fathom how one Leica M could be a burden. I mention this only to solicit responses from others - what is too much in terms of size, weight?

Having handled the 240 for a few weeks now I will agree with an earlier comment. The weight when carrying the camera around for a while with one hand does become an issue ... I don't use neck or wrist straps and while it's obviously not in the league of a DSLR I find my wrist and hand do get a little weary. I feel the addition of an M grip will likey solve this minor problem and won't detract fom the camera in any way. :)

I love the grip and highly recommend it. For those of us lucky enough to have an M9/MM and a M240, the weight and even small size difference maybe is more noticeable as we go back and forth with the cameras. I use an BlackRapid RS-7 strap and it works great for me and how I work.

The Leica grip DOES help, but if this camera is too much weight then may I suggest a lightweight P&S.

False choice. A point and shoot isn't a comparable camera in terms of IQ or functionality—at least not for my photography (don't know about yours). And I'd be happy with an M240 that's the shape and weight of an M9. I don't see why the camera got so much clunkier with this model. Cameras tend to get more svelte with new iterations. If video is the reason, that's a non-Leica ethic. I haven't shot one second of video footage with my M and I doubt most longtime Leica shooters value this feature more than they would value having the camera be as portable as it's historically been.

:confused:The shape is exactly the same as the M9 with the addition of the thumb rest and the weight is close except for the battery....Far less than the weight variation between lenses.

Been there and done that with my DPMs and although I love the little jiggers they have some limitations ... AF especially!

When I had an M8 many moons ago I had an M grip on it and found it excellent. The camera is not heavy but it's shape doesn't really offer a decent purchase for a right handed hold over an extended period ... at least with the grip you have something to hook your fingers around. :)

My main problem with the grip on the M240 is that unfortunately, I am exactly half way between the S and M sizes of finger loop and I find neither of them very comfortable. OTOH I think when using with a heavy M, R or other SLR lens, the finger loop is pretty essential for secure holding with one hand, while you focus with the other. I did wonder about trying to stretch the S finger loop slightly, after leaving it in a warm oven to soften it. I assume it is synthetic rather than natural rubber. Alternatively I could wrap some soft cloth adhesive orthopaedic tape round the inside of my M finger loop to make it a little smaller.

Not quite 1mm, about 0.75 and the thumb rest is neither here nor there, as it does not impact the thickness of the body.

It is basically Leica's own fault that this bogeyman is introduced regularly, as they, at introduction, supplied the measures including thumbrest without mentioning the actual size of the body.

I wonder whether the Leicagoodies "Sling" would be a better fit for you?

Jaap,

Good idea. I will try when I get back to the UK. I made improved Slings for myself and various friends. Instead of using the hard nylon industrial belting that Leicagoodies uses, I used a broader, softer nylon, lined with velvet on the inside, cut from old camera straps. I think I have two or three left. I have a large box of small metric hex socket screws in assorted sizes, I use for model making and unless the thread for the finger loops is a weird size, I should have something that will fit.
