Over 300 new jobs, over 100 apprenticeships. And 8 years

This supermarket opened its doors for the first time today. This has been part of my life for over 8 years and I am both happy and sorry to see the end of it.

Over 300 people, many of them long-term unemployed locals, now have jobs in this town that desperately needs them. Around 800 council workers have been brought back into the town centre, to bring life and their spend. A local couple have opened a coffee shop in the ground floor of the office, and SubWay are there too.

During the construction, we created over 100 apprentice and work placement positions and worked closely with the local college to get the maximum benefit for young people. With the refurbished multi-storey car park, we have transformed this part of town and the benefits are already being felt.

Phase 2 next year, with a bit of luck. This is what our kind of property development and regeneration are all about.

A good day.

Thanks guys.

My company deliberately and positively sets out to make our projects benefit as many local people as possible and spend as much of the money as possible in the borough. Makes a huge difference.

If every property developer worked the same way as we do, the world would be a better place.

We do.

People think that "property developers" are all bad people, who are only in it for the money.

I'm proud to work for a company that takes a longer term view.

And makes a difference.

BTW, this place has some superlatives with it, that are worth mentioning. :)

Longest raking travelators in Europe.

Largest store for this brand this year

600 car park spaces on two levels on the roof

A hectare (2.5 acres) on plan

I challenge anyone in the UK to show a photograph of a more impressive food store delivered this year.

Andy, so nice to see a Supermarket exemplifying some decent quality modern architecture (at a time when the phrase Lego Tesco signifies the worst sort of cheap prefabricated architectural cliché).

Absolutely.

Tesco-vernacular is exactly what we didn't want and what would have been completely wrong.

Credit to Sainsbury's for embracing the vision, and credit to all of us for having the vision that looks beyond "just another supermarket"

Blackpool deserves and needs this investment, jobs and catalyst for substantial change. Let's come back in 10 years and assess the impact this has made. Our experience elsewhere says that it will be transformational.
