A test I applied to myself years ago was, "if I can't do it (shoot) at home, what makes me think somewhere else will be better?"

Strangely (no really) that year a pic of mine, shot in my own backyard, blitzed approximately 1200 international competitors. My image was B&W and shot on an M6 with a 50mm Cron lens.

An analysis of the picture shows it owed nothing to it's geographical location. I leaned a lot from my own demonstration since I believed I was starting with a disadvantage by not shooting in some exotic location.

OTOH, if travel is what you want, then travel you must. Shoot and enjoy the experience.

If you are going to travel that far then NYC is better for b&w than colorful Cuba.
Where's that

Maybe you could PM your address to Neil.

And I agree with you….many of my best pics are local. As always, light (among other things) changes everything….the same location can alternately be dull or magical, depending on conditions.

Where's that

In the Revolutionary War the British viewed New York City and the Hudson River as key strategic points and possessions. Right up until we threw them out of here at gunpoint.

It now consists of a city with five boroughs located on the upper East Coast of the United States.

As has already been pointed out here black and white photography is the result of a state of mind and of seeing.....I've frequently photographed with the MM in my sitting room.

If you are interested in the results see my flickr link below.

The moral of this story is that you don't need to go anywhere, just pick up the Monochrom.

No, the moral of the story, as described in your first sentence, is that you need your brain and your eyes.

Monochrom optional.

Over a camera? Hardly. Just a tool in a long chain.

Envy and jealousy not part of my DNA on these matters. Whatever floats one's boat, to mix metaphors.

I do, however, have admiration and respect for great work, and great prints, by others. I even collect them….books, too. ;)

I was going to suggest the moon, but it would take somewhat over five hours. How about China or Hong Kong? Not just street scenes but misty landscapes and architecture.
