david strachan Posted July 4, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 4, 2014 Change file names when downloading images, using your browser/cardreader. Fast Stone does this very nicely...all my camera files have prefix of camera models. cheers Dave S

schmolinski Posted July 7, 2014 Share #4 Posted July 7, 2014 That would be a great improvement for the next FW update. But I think that will never happen
david strachan Posted July 12, 2014 Share #5 Posted July 12, 2014 hi Dave, thank you for the answer, just wondered if it works in the camera - like in the M (240) .... thomas Hi Thomas really need to change names at download stage when you are adding images to your database. Maybe I'm missing something, but what is the point of changing the names in camera.? Most software packages show renaming available during download. All best and hope it's working for you. cheers Dave S

NikonJeff Posted July 20, 2014 Share #7 Posted July 20, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) As an example, when I shoot weddings I have four Nikon D3 bodies in use. Two are mine and two are from my second shooter. To ingest the files and change the names on the import is an easy thing to do but it creates another problem with my workflow. I retain the original CF cards for up to 6 months just in case there's a problem with a missing file etc... What the Nikon system allows me to do is change the naming convention so that I use the last three digits of each camera's serial number. I can identify in an instant what camera the file came from. On a side note, my Nikon D3 bodies are almost 7 years old, so this isn't a new idea... It would nice to modify the file name on my M bodies to differentiate between my M9 and MM, so I "get" why the OP would be looking for this option. Jeff G. It would nice to modify the file name on my M bodies to differentiate between my M9 and MM, so I "get" why the OP would be looking for this option. Jeff G. Currently this very useful feature is not possible to accomplish in camera with Leica bodies. Depending on which DAM software you use to ingest files, it is a very easy and trivial task though either directly during ingest or months or years after, when re-reading the original backup media cards. I use Lightroom. During import, I have my files renamed with the camera base name included in the original base file name. Should I not do this though, Lightroom can sort images in a pool individually according to which camera model the images are recorded (I believe even according to the camera's serial number, should two cameras of same model being used. This is currently the only way to work. When I try to find a certain photograph in my catalogue or backups, I first orient myself to the original file base name and do a spotlight search (Mac OS X, but Windows would work equally). The search result usually will return several candidates, as image base names can repeat themselves when using several cameras - not a problem though, as the files can be visually confirmed and even conformed by their creation data stamp. My advice to simplify this all would be actually to completely leave the file names alone and exclusively search and manage according to metadata tags, as these will remain. sblutter Posted July 21, 2014 Share #9 Posted July 21, 2014 This goes to how you file anything else on the computer I use folders. For pics I file by how I want to see the list; Year month day, location/subject. Eg: 2014.07.21.street.NYC.Chelsea As for indiv pics, only get renamed if keepers / have been fiddled with and need resaving anyway
