marknorton Posted July 8, 2014 Share #21 Posted July 8, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Not sure about reproduction ratios, I expect this info comes in the manual of the new lens. What you can say with certainty though is the the minimum extension of the macro adapter is exactly the same as the extension when extending the lens by itself. By using the macro adapter and the lens retracted, these cancel each other out and allow the lens to be used as normal.
Advertisement Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 Hi marknorton, Take a look here The New Macro 90 Elmar. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
microview Posted July 12, 2014 Share #22 Posted July 12, 2014 I have to say that working with the macro adapter (beautiful piece of engineering though it is!) isn't easy. I have been trying to photograph flower closeups with 35, 50 and 90mm lenses, The depth of field obviously improves with the longer lens but focusing handheld is (I think) extremely demanding. For some reason with 'focus assist' set to manual, the 10x magnification often would not come up when pressing the relevant button, but with the adapter removed there were no such problems. A tiny movement of the camera and everything goes out of focus, so it's a strain even with 10x functioning. My best results were disappointing. Welcome, dear visitor! microview Posted July 12, 2014 Share #23 Posted July 12, 2014 I was told by a well-respected London Leica dealer that this lens mounted in the retracted position serves as a 50mm lens (presumably focusing would have to be by the EVF…). Can anyone confirm this and comment on resolution if used in this manner?
marknorton Posted July 12, 2014 Share #24 Posted July 12, 2014 50mm? I won't embarrass the dealer by asking which one. Fully retracted with the lens mounted on the macro-adapter with minimum extension, it acts as a normal 90mm. Extend the lens or the macro-adapter or both and it now works as a macro lens. That's the benefit of the new mount, seamless transition from mid-telephoto to macro lens without dismounting anything. With the macro adapter, all focussing is via Liveview - LVF or LCD - there is no rangefinder coupling when the adapter is used.

That's macro photography for you, extremely shallow DoF and a physical strain to hold the camera steady. You need a tripod, ideally with a mount to move the camera back and forth. Handheld is a pain and the higher the repro ratio, the worse it gets.
microview Posted July 13, 2014 Share #26 Posted July 13, 2014 50mm? I won't embarrass the dealer by asking which one. Fully retracted with the lens mounted on the macro-adapter with minimum extension, it acts as a normal 90mm. Thanks Mark. Well, that's what he said: no adapter, lens collapsed into camera body and latest 90 Macro functions as 50mm focal length!
Erik Gunst Lund Posted July 15, 2014 Share #27 Posted July 15, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was told by a well-respected London Leica dealer that this lens mounted in the retracted position serves as a 50mm lens (presumably focusing would have to be by the EVF…). Can anyone confirm this and comment on resolution if used in this manner? Hopefully just a misunderstanding... could be: It retracts into the camera similar to a 50mm lens (the f/ 2.8).... microview Posted July 15, 2014 Share #28 Posted July 15, 2014 Hopefully just a misunderstanding... could be: It retracts into the camera similar to a 50mm lens (the f/ 2.8).... Well no. I was back at the shop yesterday and we tried it retracted with live view: total blur from 0.7m to infinity! So earlier reported claim looks like nonsense. Erik Gunst Lund Posted July 15, 2014 Share #29 Posted July 15, 2014 What did the dealer have to say about it? I'm chocked that they could even have the thought of the lens changing focal length due to collapsing it...
algrove Posted July 15, 2014 Share #30 Posted July 15, 2014 It just shows that often dealers know less than we do about what they sell. Perhaps the guy was selling shoes last month.
jamriman Posted August 8, 2014 Share #31 Posted August 8, 2014 I just ordered the new 90. I have the old adapter and like that it's coupled. I still prefer to use the optical VF over the EV. Just wondering for those who bought the new adapter, do you leave it on all the time and just use the EV since it's not coupled? Or do you find that you take it off to use OVF when macro isn't wanted? Thanks.
lct Posted August 9, 2014 Share #32 Posted August 9, 2014 Perhaps the guy was selling shoes last month. He's been fired for telling clients that heel lifts change shoe size i've been told.
