Guest guy_mancuso Posted May 1, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 1, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just looking at some images i shot in Mexico over the weekend just walking on the beach and in town. it strikes me just how sharp the 28 cron and 35 lux are but also the bokeh from these wide lenses , you would think there would be little of the OOF area magic , well that is wrong to think that. i find the Bokeh on these lenses just amazing. I shot the 35mm on the beach and the 28 cron in town. I added some vignetting to some of the beach shots for effect. So first is the 35mm Lux at pretty much wide open or darn close to it. Just look at the detail here Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Guest guy_mancuso Posted May 1, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 1, 2007 Let's look at the 28 cron which the bokeh on this lens is really something else. My 28 cron is being replaced due to focus well past infinity and though I've kept the 35 cron, I have to focus bracket it due to focus shift - however, when it works, it's pretty cool: Welcome, dear visitor! norm_snyder Posted May 1, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 1, 2007 Hello Guy-- Thanks for posting these. In addition to reminding me that I need to get to the beach soon, they helped me resolve the dilemma of whether to order the 28 Summicron. It really does have pleasant OOF rendition. Your posts have, as always, been helpful, even if, as in this case, they'll cost me... I just sent Tony Rose an e-mail. Norm

sdai Posted May 1, 2007 Share #6 Posted May 1, 2007 I'm finding more common languages we both speak, Guy ... and I'm adding vignetting to some street and head shots quite often as well. Now if Leica would let us having the choice to turn off in-camera correction completely, let the light fall off.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted May 1, 2007 Share #7 Posted May 1, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) yes the 28 cron is certainly one of my favorites in my bag, i really love this lens.

[/quote I actually like vignetting on some images like the beach shots were continious tone runs across the whole image it just adds a little impact to the images. I think though I would rather just do it in post though than the camera just gives you more control . But if you turned the lens coding off than you certainly should get some with the wides
jaapv Posted May 1, 2007 Share #9 Posted May 1, 2007 Just push the frameline selector lever over manually when taking the shot. Lens detection will be switched off automatically.
sdai Posted May 1, 2007 Share #10 Posted May 1, 2007 Just push the frameline selector lever over manually when taking the shot. Lens detection will be switched off automatically. Wow, I haven't tried that, Jaap. Thanks a lot for the tip.
rwfreund Posted May 1, 2007 Share #11 Posted May 1, 2007 I have been looking daily at several vendor's web sites for the 28 cron. I have a bad case of lens acquisition syndrome. I wish somebody would do a web mashup that listed who has what in stock. Maybe someone has, but I haven't found it yet. -bob
hankg Posted May 1, 2007 Share #12 Posted May 1, 2007 The 28/2 is my favorite wide on the M8. Snapshots from this past weekend's R & R. It is not at all harsh, nice bokeh and smooth transitions. A nice match for the M8. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! sean_reid Posted May 1, 2007 Share #14 Posted May 1, 2007 I agree. I need to test for the focus-shift issue but I think the OOF rendering of the 35/1.4 asph and 50/1.4 asph is (for my taste) some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. I was reminded of this recently when testing the CV 40/1.4 which is not to my taste in the OOF areas. Thanks for the examples, Sean
Guest guy_mancuso Posted May 1, 2007 Share #15 Posted May 1, 2007 You know i have been using leica glass for awhile now with the R and the m and without major testing but more feeling about this, is i just find the leica glass has such smooth transitions between critical focus and going out of focus. maybe it is what i want to see not sure but just that overall feeling about the system at large makes me feel this way. i really just love the character of the glass, no matter what lens i put on even though there different and draw differently but that feeling is still there. okay maybe i need some meds who knows but it certainly has been with me for awhile on how i feel how this stuff looks. really if you get down to the nitty gritty of it all what really matters the most is how the image looks and i just love these M lenses and even the zeiss and CV's glass. i really think it is all about designing glass for simplicity and manual focus in this M mount

The Rodenstocks Sironars, the Hassy/Zeiss Biogon, 100/3.5, 150/2.8, 180/4, Canon's 35/1.4, 85/1.2, 135/2. Leica seems to have a bit more consistancy across the line but at about $3,000 a pop for a prime and a narrower selection you would expect that. I expect if Canon or Pentax could get $2,800 for a 50/1.4 they would produce a stunning performer. It's great that there is a company that can do that sort of price be damned (to a point) engineering.

Guest guy_mancuso Posted May 1, 2007 Share #18 Posted May 1, 2007 I agree Hank i hit a couple cherry lenses with Canon and Nikon through the years and some are extremely good but the rest of the line i would call more average quality of course the good ones come with a price tag. leica although expensive does produce awesome glass. i do like the price be damned attitude at least you know your getting the best but also I think Leica now can take a look at more general purpose lenses and keep the prices around the new 28mm 2.8 and get more folks in the door, than they always can move up if they want too. i would like to see more expansion like this for one to keep the company going and also to let folks that don't want to spend that much money have a chance to buy Leica. i think having both sides covered can only be helpful for the end user and leica
Eoin Posted May 1, 2007 Share #19 Posted May 1, 2007 Guy, you've got to stop doing things like this, LOL You must be on a Sales volume commission from Leica, if not you should be. I've been curious about this 28 Cron, while I love the bokeh and look of the 35 Lux it's a little too narrow as a general walkabout lens. I'm thinking that perhaps the 28 may be the answer half way between my 21 & 35. You've had the 24 as well but kept the 28, what is the overall attraction on the 28?, is it the FOV or the fact you can clearly see the frame lines in the VF for better framing?. How do you rate/compare the fingerprint with say the 21 or 35?. Thanks for any insight you can give, Eoin
Guest guy_mancuso Posted May 1, 2007 Share #20 Posted May 1, 2007 I really like the focal length and also the framelines even with the 1.25 on i can use it without glasses on. The 24mm i had to take the 1.25 off just could not see the framelines. So having the 28mm and just looking at the whole finder for the 21mm made more sense. i still may get the 24mm back only because i am a pig about this. LOL and of course it is a stop faster than the WATE. The 28mm to me is like the perfect lens on the M8, it just seems to fit it the best although the rest are great the 28mm is like the lens cap. i personally can't recommend the focal length enough but i also have not tried the new 28mm either but the cron is just a beauty and most likely never will sell this lens ever. Heck wish i got a commission , I would be rich . LOL. Hell even a discount would be nice. LOL i do like the 15mm, 21,28,50 setup. Except I have the WATE, 28,35 and 50 but i somewhat have to force myself on the 35 which for some reason gets used the least
