Come to think of it why should Leica go to the trouble enabling an EVF that they already found to be difficult to a camera in the last year and a bit of its production run when they have a good in.house one with a different interface? It would be for the next iteration of the M in my view.

Hi Jaap - didn't you know it was coming free with the new CCD based Leica ME with the battery and electronics from the M240? :D:D

I`m all in on this one but don`t forget the new shutter and RF.

Well, just one possible explanation comes to mind.. what if evf-2 production has stopped? ie. Olympus (or their contractor) has moved focus completely over to evf-4.

Then this would be a stop-gap move from Leica until the next iteration of the M.

No, made by Epson for both Olympus and Leica, in China. It explains at least part of the price difference. As a large customer, Olympus was able to negotiate a better price than small player Leica.

Which you know for a fact or simply speculate about? The other theory is that Olympus had to pay higher prices for the EVF as it was developed for them and marketed when it was state of the art technology;)

And the Saga continues that now as development costs and tools have been long amortized and old unsold (not to say obsolete) brite stock simply be Leica labeled Leica could negotiate a lower price per unit than the big player who no longer sells this outdated product.

So much about manufacturing, costing, negotiations and speculation.

Given the time scale Leica and Olympus must have been shopping at approximately the same time.

No sir. About a year and a half apart.

Correct. But I would imagine the development time of the 240 is considerably longer than that off the Olympus XZ1, given the difference in camera and maker.

We don't know for sure that Oly negotiated a better price, but so what? Even if they paid identical prices to Epson for identical technology, wouldn't Leica charge more simply because the red dot carries a premium? Why would they behave other than as rational, profit making businesspeople?

The T finder is better than the VF2 but has a unique interface making it unsuitable for a M but perhaps suitable for a M successor. Having said that I really hope they can technologically accomodate a better higher res finder (with eye detection) via a firmware update. A VF4 variant would be very welcome.

An EVF 4 would be nice, but as I understand it Leica tried it and could not get it to work on the 240.

I fear there will never be enough horsepower under the bonnet to run a higher resolution EVF.

With a more powerful processor in an uprated M .... maybe ...... but then that would be a new camera .....

Leica is a generation behind the leaders in the the electronic hardware and has relied on the RF, super image quality and unbeatable legacy lenses as a unique selling point ......

.... next time round I don't think anyone will put up with low FPS, slow power up, screen refresh, low res EVF or EVF lag .... so they will have to be as good or better than the competition ...... or people like me will be sticking to my old M ....

Yes, Leica is perpetually playing catchup in electronics. Their time to market and product cycle times are too long. The EVF situation would be enough for me not to buy an M Type 240 until Photokina at which point the future direction may be clearer. If it isn't, and EVF is important to you, I still wouldn't buy. In the meantime, I have bought a spare Olympus finder, just in case.
