nicolaz Posted July 16, 2014 Share #102 Posted July 16, 2014 Name one. I was happy with the original 5D with the 50mm L 1.2 (much bigger, no much heavier). I'm really confident on the mkIII capabilities I keep seeing interesting things about Fuji (x100s and T1) and since I quite often shot in the dark, the Sony a7s arouse my curiosity. As soon as I can I'll rent them all and go for a walk. quick note: just so you know, I'm happy with Leica too. I'll probably buy a Lux 50mm asph as soon as I can (there is no electronic there ).. I'm just saying that it's taking too much time to deliver fixes and small upgrades. Again: in electronic in 8 months we see 2 different iPhones, Leica released a firmware. Given the price I pay I'm expecting more.
justj Posted July 16, 2014 Share #103 Posted July 16, 2014 Name one. 1, Sony A7R 2, Sony RX1 3, Olympus OMD-EM5 4, Sony NEX 7 ... and then M240 in that order for me.
Rick Posted July 16, 2014 Share #104 Posted July 16, 2014 1, Sony A7R Nope2, Sony RX1 Yep 3, Olympus OMD-EMe Nope 4, Sony NEX 7 Nope-Nope ... and then M240 in that order for me. I doubt you would be happy coming from the M240 with any of those except the RX1. I've had every one of those except the OMD and sold them, except the RX1. Not trying to be smug, much , just trying to add my opinion for nicolaz's consideration. nicolaz - Get the absolutely fantastic 50 Lux and it all follows from there. But, nicolaz has expressed an interest in up to date electronics and newer cameras. If, he is interested in buying a 50 Lux, then none of these cameras are going to be a product he is really going to find as his favorite. I just felt the best suggestion is a digital M. Enjoy your cameras - a lot of nice gear.

A7s is one for lower light, but high ISO is a compromise with dynamic range and noise gets pretty bad in the samples I've seen from the A7s. I'm not sure if you would be happy with it given your interest in M and 5DIII. nicolaz Posted July 16, 2014 Share #108 Posted July 16, 2014 Here is an interesting take on high ISO:Is Pursuit of High ISO a Fool’s Errand? | byThom | Thom Hogan thank you RickLeica.. my intent is not to go over 12800 (not even 6400). I'm just hoping to have really good result at 2500 which is the limit for me on my M (unless I really want to bring the picture at home, at that point i shot 3200). I'll rent it and see what happen. Enjoy your cameras - a lot of nice gear. IF the 50lux is the primary consideration, it definitely will not deliver on the Sony A7. Also, before i ever complain again (to myself) about slowness of FW updates from Leica, there is still no FW update from sony as far as i am aware of, to address the shutter vibration on the A7r. I had every intention of switching from Leica to Sony, but ended up just last week getting the M240 so that i could use all of the lenses that i want to use and not just the few that work well with the A7r. More than happy with the M240 and now kick myself for not getting one sooner.

jip Posted July 17, 2014 Share #112 Posted July 17, 2014 I always tell friends that they go crazy about me buying leica, and they go from Fuji x10 to x100 and then x-Pro with some lenses. And then they wanted full frame... Okay, possible... So they move to another brand because Fuji doesn't deliver, they started buying some leica glass because I told them I love it on my M240 M3 etc. They tried it nagged about how slow it was (no auto focus) but how great it was... In the end when I look at what I've spend and what they've spend their expenditures come close to mine, and they still some day want that Digital Leica like me... I told one of them that once and he was shocked and kind of annoyed by the fact that meanwhile he could've had what he really wanted if he just saved up a little longer like I advised when he wanted to go from x100 to x-pro... I said save the money save a little longer and get yourself a M-E or M240.
CheshireCat Posted July 17, 2014 Share #113 Posted July 17, 2014 there is still no FW update from sony as far as i am aware of, to address the shutter vibration on the A7r. AFAIK the problem is that the current A7r hardware does not support EFC (electronic first curtain). A firmware upgrade could mitigate the issue by inserting a long delay after the first curtain closing. In any case, that would not be acceptable in many shooting conditions. And certainly not a valid reason for me to finally buy the camera.

intermediatic Posted July 17, 2014 Share #118 Posted July 17, 2014 There's a lot of wisdom to what jip said. I tried a Sony A7R and was truly disappointed. To start off with, it felt weird, jiggly, a bit like it was a contraption R2D2 made that was going to explode in my hands. And it didn't work with most of my glass, producing huge amounts of chromatic aberration. That said, 95% of the time I use CV glass. I have some Leica lenses, but CV is so good, way better in image than what I got of Canon's L glass and far smaller and lighter. If I had bought Leica glass exclusively for my kit, I'd be in the poorhouse, but CV has saved me many pennies. Great stuff. I'm sure a Summi would be very nice, but my Nokton is pretty darn awesome! Lesson learnt, and i finally got the M240, now i am happy again Unfortunately, Sony does not design cameras for Leica-M lenses. I wanted to use the A7r with my M lenses as much as you did, but waited for the first user feedbacks. Apart from issues with several M lenses, the lack of EFC is a showstopper for me. Sensor technology is improving every year, so we will be eventually able to use our lenses with non-Leica bodies.
