mattwong92 Posted June 5, 2014 Share #1 Posted June 5, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Guys, Im a new Leica user. Bought an iii a with 2 LTM lenses 3 months back, now I have the iii a, m2, and just bought an m8. Probably not good since I used credit for all of them. However I was wondering how should I test my M8 to verify it is in all working order? I have looked through the images produced by the camera and there seems to be no hot spots, lines or anything from the sensor. Besides this is there anything else I should look for? Thanks, -Matthew

Jeff S Posted June 6, 2014 Share #2 Posted June 6, 2014 Besides this is there anything else I should look for? Well, I hope you got a warranty from the seller (from a trustworthy dealer), just in case. That would have been my advice on what to look for….before buying. And insurance. Then you can just concentrate on pics. Jeff
mattwong92 Posted June 6, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted June 6, 2014 I got it from KEH used. They have a 14 day return and 6 month warrenty? I didn't buy the extended 1 year one
wda Posted June 6, 2014 Share #4 Posted June 6, 2014 Welcome! It should be easy to test to your satisfaction in a day or so. Think of it as a potential stepping stone to an upgrade to a later model. That is what Leica offer if something fails which they cannot repair because of lack of spare parts. I am currently reworking M8 pictures taken in 2009 and have been stunned by their quality. So much so that the camera has been brought back into use. So, check it thoroughly to satisfy yourself that there are no problems, other than possible dust spots on the sensor which can be removed before or after processing. Enjoy! mattwong92 Posted June 10, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted June 10, 2014 So i've been using the M8 for about a week now and I love it. Very engaging rather than just filling up memory cards on a DSLR (just for me personally). Ive taken some sample pictures at High ISO and and seeing vertical lines at iso 2500. I understand the issue can get worse over time and it differs camera to camera. I have attached them and was wondering if anyone could advise on if I should just return the camera to KEH. The images I am concerned about have highlighted circles around concern areas. All shots are taken above 1250 at f2.0. I have also attached daytime shots for comparison Thanks, -Matthew Welcome, dear visitor! mattwong92 Posted June 10, 2014 Author Share #7 Posted June 10, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) A couple more. I really don't want to return the camera. I found it in an iso 160 image however i had to edit it a lot for it to appear. Images 1, 2 should show them. 3,4,5 are to show why I really love this camera. No post - processing I can get magic shots. So the question is, if it gets worse over time how bad will it be? Will it start showing up as bright pink lines in images like 3,4,5? -Matt Welcome, dear visitor! luigi bertolotti Posted June 10, 2014 Share #8 Posted June 10, 2014 Welcome to the M8 club !! Looking at your pictures, the only issue I have recognized at once is in picture #1 : it is the well know "green band issue" , which happens when there is a strong light source next to the border of the frame ... time ago (my M8 dates to 2007...) it happened to me too, and was able to reproduce it (*)... there were some posts about in the forum... I frankly do not remember if it was solved with some Firmware update, but I didn't experience it anymore and forgot... Be aware that M8 is someway critical to be used at 2500 ISO... if you expose RIGHT and make a good processing of the DNG you can get decent results... but it's really a "limit" ISO setting... with my M8, I have always tried to stay between 160 and 640. (*) It was consistent, but elusive too.. took a shot with a lamp "next" to the border---> green band, moved the lamp 2 cm (distance 2 meters around)---> no band, moved a pair of cms more---> band.... jaapv Posted June 10, 2014 Share #9 Posted June 10, 2014 Green band is an M8 foible and can be caused by a highlight on the edge of te frame. In real life it rarely happens. It cannot get better or worse over time, just avoid putting a highlight exactly on the edge. All your other images appear to have veiling flare which comes from the lens and/or are vastly underexposed. Use a lens hood and take care of your exposure.
