What's the difference between Leica M Elmarit 28/2.8 E46 and E39

The previous Elmarit #1109 had roughly the same size as the Summicron 28.

See pdf file attached.

Never used it though sorry.

The current Elmarit asph #11606 is smaller and lighter.

It is a very sharp lens with high contrast and a slightly harsher bokeh than the Summicron's.

Here are Erwin Puts' test results comparing the two lenses you mention (as well as the 28 f/2)

Testreports

Erwin rates the non-ASPH a bit higher, but that is (IMHO) because he places extra emphasis on overall contrast. The MTFs seem to indicate that the new lens is a bit more consistent from the center out (flatter curves) @ 40 lppm, so by MY standards I'd call that slightly better.

Personally, I use the previous-generation E49 28 f/2.8, and the only reason I might leave it is for the extreme compactness of the ASPH f/2.8. I've tried those two together, and the ASPH is a touch sharper away from the center of the image at 100% pixels from an M8, but not enough for that alone to make me change (yet).

Realistically, the optical differences among all Leica's post-1980 28mms amount to angels on the head of a pin compared to other factors - cost, size, aperture (if one counts the f/2 Summicron in the mix).

Thanks for both inputs. I love the new E39 because it's really compact, but every store is out of stock, maybe I have to find a pre one.

Adan, your lens is E49, is it the 3rd version?

My acknowledge is that there are 5 version of 28/2.8

1st, 1965-1972, 9 elements;

2nd, 1972-1979, 8 elements;

3rd, 1979-1993, E49,yours?

4th, 1993-2005?, E46,

5th, 2005-current, E39.

The E46 is rated as 1400-2000USD today, I'm so surprised, it's more expensive than the new one. It seems sellers want to bid up it as the Summicron 35/2 Pre-ASPH~

Leslie: yes, my current lens is the version 3 - from about 1983 or so. The only thing to correct in your list is that the 5th version (ASPH) only appeared in late 2006. Leica went for a year or two with no f/2.8 28mm in their lineup between 4 and 5.

I keep going back to my tests comparing my v.3 with the ASPH - and Leica may sucker me yet. If one cropped a square out of the middle of an M8 image, the lenses are basically identical over that area - but outside that area, at the frame ends, the ASPH definitely maintains its performance better. Even at f/2.8 it is better than the v.3 stopped down to f/5.6.

I had a 35mm f/2 the size of the 28E ASPH (even took the same lens shade) and that was a perfect size for a "main" lens on the M cameras.

And since, as an early M8 adopter, I can get the ASPH discounted to under $1100 new...

Adan, thanks a lot. At the begining, I guessed the v5 28/2.8 asph is mainly for M8, I worry about the edge image quality(because of the low price also), it seems I was wrong. Then, I think I should go for the asph one if I can find it recently, thanks again.

I have a second version, 8 element, that is from 1969.

Elmarit II

Some litteratures are not really accurate.

Best regards

JC

Good as always, JC... me too noticed something strange in the "5 version schema"... what about the "almost 1st" version with "no protruding back element" ? That's Yours !

(BTW, I have a "very very 1st" , 2.06x.xxx, Wetzlar)

Thanks for the correction, these date is from another site, I have never verify it.

The only accurate litterature about is the James Lager's issues : Volume II Lenses.

( with the years I have almost all what it was written about in D, E, F, I )

Best regards

jc
