Shot Count on a Leica M

It is well known that this does not work for the M240. The image number is not stored in a user-interpretable format, unlike the Hexadecimal format of the M9, MM etc which (as you point out) can be converted into a decimal value using the appropriate tool.

The word on the street is that the shutter actuation count is stored in Klingon.

Might as well be.....and it raises the issue of disposing of your M. I might sell mine soon, so what do you say to the dealer or the private buyer? Best I can do is a guesstimate, which is in part backed up by the camera's condition.

Why should this be a problem? It never is with film cameras…. The only reason it is done with most digicams is because one can.

I agree Jaap, why should it? But unfortunately it has become a 'feature' of buying secondhand digital M Leicas and other quality digital bodies. I have sold many such bodies from a D3s to an M8.2 and it's often the first question on buyers lips.

Probably because buyers can now verify 'mileage' in a way they could never do with film.

Perhaps Leica, with the M240, has set the trend in phasing this out.

It has occurred to me that if a person can determine from their image archive how many images were shot with their M240, that would be a reasonably accurate shot count. This method would not be exact, taking into consideration images that were deleted in camera, but it would have to be fairly close.

This approximate shot count would probably be easier to determine for those who have a new or new-ish M240 than those who have been shooting with theirs for months on end, but even the shot count on older M240s could be figured out with a bit of effort.

Don't forget every time you turn on live view the shutter activates. Also, if you forget to turn live view off, and turn the camera off, the shutter activates when you turn the camera on. When you hit the video button the shutter activates.
