genefama Posted April 24, 2014 Share #1 Posted April 24, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) The burning question: Will this work on the M as well as the mirrorless T camera and if so will it have state-of-the-art resolution? The current EVF is junk and needs an update. I'm hoping we get some good news tomorrow. AlanJW Posted April 24, 2014 Share #3 Posted April 24, 2014 Leica deided to change the contacts so they are in the shoe. That rules out the new EVF for M240 even if the firmware could be adapted. The VF4, which is far superior to the VF2, will physically fit on a M240 (I have tried this) but is not recognized by the camera and hence is useless. I agree that the VF2 needs to be replaced and I hope Leica will allow the VF4 in a firmware update. The update coming in May does not appear to do this, however and I fear that Leica may just not ever get around to giving us VF4 capability.
LocalHero1953 Posted April 24, 2014 Share #4 Posted April 24, 2014 I've been convinced by comments elsewhere on this forum that the VF4 is unadaptable to the M, even with a firmware upgrade. The T announcement has me wondering though. Does this mean that Leica has decided that, like the M sensor design, EVF technology is too important to modern cameras to buy-in complete, and so is designing its own (while making use of the same panel as other manufacturers, as seems to be the case with the T Visoflex)? If so, will May 24 bring us an announcement not just of new firmware, but a new Leica M Visoflex, maybe based on the one for the T but in an M fitting? We can always hope. genefama Posted April 24, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted April 24, 2014 I hope so. I believe the current explanation for restricting it to the VF2 is that the lower resolution combined with the M processor allows refresh rates that are fast enough for video. Yet one more way the silly inclusion of video undermines the M camera for its native demographic (still photographers).
ttheinz Posted April 24, 2014 Share #6 Posted April 24, 2014 It still is little more than a toy if the screen blacks out and we can fire a photo about every other second.
jaapv Posted April 24, 2014 Share #7 Posted April 24, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Any EVF will do that to a certain extent. The best thing to do is to freeze the image during the blackout by displaying the image review.
ttheinz Posted April 24, 2014 Share #8 Posted April 24, 2014 If we can get a mechanical mirror to move up and down almost indistinguishably without affecting our picture-taking ability, shouldn't we hope an electronic vf could work at least as well (quickly)? jaapv Posted April 24, 2014 Share #9 Posted April 24, 2014 Possibly - in the future. Present day cameras don’t pack that kind of computing power.
wlaidlaw Posted April 25, 2014 Share #10 Posted April 25, 2014 Possibly - in the future. Present day cameras don’t pack that kind of computing power. They could have if someone decided to put an A8 processor in one. Down to cost I suppose. Wilson
