Just got the 21mm/ f1.4 ASPH for my M, and can't say enough good things about it. But I cannot figure out how to get a protective lens filter (a UV filter) that will fit on it because the curvature of the lens surface protrudes slightly from the lens body. A normal filter would come into contact with the glass. Anyone know the way to do this? The lens manual discusses it but not in a way I can understand. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Don't forget that the serie 8 filters need the lens hood to be fited in the lens.

Thank you...do you know if the series 8 filters have enough clearance not to hit the lens surface when screwed onto the lens? I found several of these filters online, but i can't tell from the pictures or descriptions if they do. Thanks. tom

Series 8 filters do not screw in. They are held in place by the lens hood and yes do clear the front element just fine. Your lens manual should discuss such things.

Series 8 filters can be a bit tricky to find. B+W are great but they only make them every few weeks or months so there's a long wait time. Looking now, Dale Photo has them in stock and there are several on eBay right now too.

I got a series 8, 3-stop ND I wanted for mine. From https://www.foto-huppert.de/default2.asp

It's a special order. It's a right clunky fit - it's just held in place by the lens hood, so be careful when you unscrew it, as the filter will fall out. It wobbles a bit when it's in there. Works fine though and is correctly sized of course wrt the front element.

Everything Reds said is right, but I do use a clear filter or a yellow filter when appropriate.

I'm usually (always?) a filter guy, but that isn't really possible with the WATE, so I'm trying to relax a bit about it. Everything else gets filters though :).

Unscew the hood exposing the red nose and screw on this filter holder.

I have B+W filters which clear the front element.

The glass in the filter does not sit exactly half way within it's mount but closer to one edge so just to be safe I have always just made sure that side was facing away from the front element.

Also, the filter was just a little loose when screwed down between the hood and front element - a very small wedge of paper does the job to stop the rattle but I used the smallest sliver of adhesive teflon glide tape applied to the inside of the hood.

I bought mine when I got the lens in 2010 (Mainline Photographics here in Sydney are the Australian B+W distributors). I ordered one but bought the second one they brought in as Mainline had been advised by B+W that they were considering ceasing production due to low demand. I don't know what the situation is now.

I didnt like the rattling, put tiny strips of duct tape in the hood on the flat surface that retains the filter and it solved the ker-plunking problem.

  • 1 year later...

A curious question:

if I own both "Leica Series 8 Circular Polarizing 13372" and “Series 8 UVA Filter”, could I put them together into the lens hood?

Since I am planing to buy a new Polarizing filter, is there any other options for 21mm f1.4?

Thanks
