Iansky Posted March 30, 2014 Share #1 Posted March 30, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have just purchased a Leica 111f with a 5cm Summicron lens, it came with the original box with both serial numbers underneath, instruction manual, small rectangular metal plate(not sure what that is for - film loading?) and the leather case. All is in good condition with just signs of use (no dents, just some rubbing marks on the top). The lens has recently been stripped, cleaned and front element polished and it is immaculate and smooth - rangefinder and shutter speeds all fine and purchased from a reputable retailer. Serial number of the camera is: 823172 Serial number of the lens: 1370371 The camera also has the self timer and again all works. Yet to put film through it but would like to know anything about this as the serial number appears later than indicated in books/sites etc? Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Hi Iansky, Take a look here Boxed Leica 111f. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
luigi bertolotti Posted March 30, 2014 Share #2 Posted March 30, 2014 What's your problem about the serial number ? It belongs, as must be, to a batch of IIIf dated 1956 : 822901 825000 Leica IIIf (RD+BA) 1956 2120 And the Summicron 5cm is from the same era : the list in our Wiki describes that batch as made with M mount lenses.... but such exceptions are very common in the years of coexistence of the two systems. Compliments for your aquisition : IIIf is the "last of the true Barnacks" and a superfine item to have.
wda Posted March 30, 2014 Share #3 Posted March 30, 2014 Although not shown, the metal plate you mention is probably a template for cutting the film leader on self-loaded cassettes. A real find for you.
Iansky Posted March 30, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted March 30, 2014 Thank you both, I could not find that data so great to know it is all valid. The metal plate is rectangular and does not have a shape for cutting out the relevant leader for loading unless it is to put the film on when cutting. It is a lovely camera and to find it with the box, case and instruction manual is a real bonus - just want the film to arrive so that I can try it out. I have thought about looking for a 5cm viewfinder but they seem quite hard to track down in reasonable condition for a sensible price - still, no rush as the rangefinder & viewfinder are both clear and bright. jerzy Posted March 30, 2014 Share #5 Posted March 30, 2014 The lens has recently been stripped, cleaned and front element polished.... polishing removed coating, i suppose. is it re-coated? jerzy
earleygallery Posted March 30, 2014 Share #6 Posted March 30, 2014 The metal plate you mention is probably the stiffening piece that slots into the 'pocket' in the ERC. Look at the top seam of the back of the case which should be open. It's for storing a note sheet or card.
Iansky Posted March 31, 2014 Author Share #7 Posted March 31, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks both, The lens was recoated as part of the process; the metal plate and card with info on film/shooting settings was in the slot at the back of the case. I have now heard (via this forum) from the person who I suspect owned it before me and sold it to the retailer........small world, they have confirmed the plate was to stop the transfer of pressure to the camera back when closing the press stud. They also confirmed the camera worked well so very reassuring.
