M8 frameline lever strange behaviour

Hey folks,

I have an issue with the frameline lever on my M8. As far as I understand it is used to show me how a different lens would frame on my camera. Problem is, when attaching a lens depending on the focal length the lever might be in a different position than default. And I can't turn it back.

So if I attach a 28mm lens I can't visualize other frameline pairs as the lever points to the lens and is stuck there. When attaching a 50mm lens I can only move the lever to the 28+90mm position, not back to the 24+35mm. Only with a 24 or 35mm lens I can visualize the other options.

Is that supposed to behave like that? If so, that's kinda stupid, isn't it?

Yes, I agree, something is sticking but unfortunately might be major surgery to fix because the levers are buried deep in the camera. Try removing the lens and GENTLY exercising the lever. You should see all three frameline variants come up.

One further thought, are these Leica lenses you are putting on the camera?

Thanks for your answers! Just to make myself clear: I can move the lever freely. But if I attach a lens it will move along to the respective framline setting. So attaching 35 or 24 it will stay right (when I look on the camera front) and I can move the lever to left (50/75 and 28/90)

Attaching a 50 or 75 lens the lever will be in the middle position and I can move it to the left (28/90)

Attaching a 28 or 90 lens the lever points to the left and I can't move it anymore.

In my understanding a metal part on the lens mount actuates the lever and moves it in the correct position thus displaying the correct framelines for that lens. If I want to move the lever "backwards" I would have to force it against the metal on the lens.

Important question:

Can you attach a 28 or 90 mm lens and move the lever backwards? (i.e. clockwise when looking on the camera front)

I can only move the lever counterclockwise.

I only have one Leica lens and it's not even a "real" M lens as it is the Summicron-C 40/2...

Thanks for your help!

PS: Funny thing: suddenly it works. Don't know why. Sorry for the troubles! :) Nice!

Yes you can move the lever freely between its three positions with a lens attached, there is a spring in the mechanism. However, if it is in one of the two end positions, you van only move it in one direction, obviously.
