luigi bertolotti Posted March 24, 2014 Share #1 Posted March 24, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Not a famous lens, not highly valued, not rare in terms of numbers, but curiosly difficult to find, a Summaron 35 f3,5 for M2 has finally reached my home... with its distinct shape that makes it so different from the first (ungoggled) version... Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! ... and so, at the end I finally have the complete trio (I left out from the pic the SM items... ) : i have always noticed as a curiosity the modification of the orientation of part of the front engraving in this last version Someone can of course observe that there are a pair of other variants... (apart the obvious respective meter or feet versions).... well... I am not in hurry... I got my first Summaron 35 3,5 in 1981 (Screwmount A36 version, my first 35mm for Leica) and this is my fifth one... there is time to go on... given its affordable cost and the absence of really rare variants (even the "postkamera" version isn't highly valued) , Summaron 35 3,5 is one of the few lenses of which one can hope to put together the complete set of variations without spending insane amounts of money. Michael Hiles Posted March 24, 2014 Share #2 Posted March 24, 2014 Very nice indeed. This is a much better lens than is often supposed.
derleicaman Posted March 25, 2014 Share #3 Posted March 25, 2014 It is certainly an under rated and fun lens to collect. I have some of these, too. I am especially fond of my 2.8 M2 version of this lens. A great, small, lightweight performer even on the M9.

Guest Mr. B Posted March 26, 2014 Share #7 Posted March 26, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Congratulations on your acquisition. I hope it gives you years of service and pleasure. I have the 35mm F/ 2.8 Summaron with the goggles. It is one of my most used lenses. I have grown to prefer the 50mm frame lines just like when I use my 50mm cron. luigi bertolotti Posted March 26, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted March 26, 2014 Congratulations on your acquisition. I hope it gives you years of service and pleasure. ...Mr. B Not such a pleasure from the first trial (quick shot with M8 yesterday night, at f 4 and f 16, 3rd pic taken with its sibling for M3 ... the one at left in my above pic of the "trio") Welcome, dear visitor! "Houston, we have a problem..." : easy diagnosis is that the optical cell has been dismounted, cleaned, remounted wrongly (too next to the focal plane) Mounted on a Visoflex (strange combo, but allows some basic testing) : all ok, rendering identical to its older brother, small adjustement of the focus changing from one to the other... ---> lens cell misplaced into the mount. UliWer Posted March 26, 2014 Share #9 Posted March 26, 2014 I was already going to ask you, if the rear elements of the Summarons in your collection all show some haze - which is very often with this lens type (also for the 1:2.8/35mm and the 1:5.6/28mm). After reading about the problem I am almost sure that the rear lens of your "bad" version is very clear and the misplacement of the elements happened when it was "serviced". Guest Mr. B Posted March 27, 2014 Share #10 Posted March 27, 2014 I am sorry about your lens. Hopefully you can get it fixed. Mr. B

After reading about the problem I am almost sure that the rear lens of your "bad" version is very clear and the misplacement of the elements happened when it was "serviced". Exactly... lenses are very clean when spotted... clearly serviced and badly reassembled... and not of few millimeters, I'd say... by sense , considering that from my test on Visoflex the lenses'package in itself looks correct, and that the lens never focuses at infinity, I'd say that the whole glass assembly is mispaced towards the back by more than the axial focus throw (around 2mm), so I'd say a misplacement of 4-5 mm (I think that maybe it could be possible even to compute it, evaluating the wider field of view that the lens takes when mounted and doing some math)
luigi bertolotti Posted March 29, 2014 Author Share #12 Posted March 29, 2014 Of course, on the uncropped Leica M situation doesn't become better (M has many pluses on M8... but not the magic to fix a lens... ) Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! I did notice that the back part of the lens is very different in the two versions (first, this "bad" M2 then my "sane" M3) ... do someone know if it is right like this ? (Btw... the vendor, contacted, has already expressed his availability to fix it for free "if possible")
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!
