Leica 1A

I have had this Leica 1A for a few years now and it has reached the end of it's functional life for me due to my eyesight. Is there a camera person in South Florida to whom I could take this camera and have it validated as to it's age, authenticity, and lack or otherwise of molestation. The serial number appears to be 1565 and this is engraved very lightly. On the top of the viewfinder is engraved Rio de Janeiro Sao Paulo underneath Luiz Ferrando & Cia Lida. There is an element of speculation on my part because I am using equiptment to read the lettering. I got a lot of good service out of this camera so while I am emotionally involved I am not financially involved. I would like to find out if it is what it seems to be and the best manner to pass it on maximizing my benefit.

With anything Leica you can basically list it on ebay with a 99p start price and it will sell for it's right price more or less.

The key is to have some good feedback and post lots of nice clear photos of the item and a detailed description.

Leica collectors are all over ebay!

Placing it on eBay together with decent pictures of its condition should at least give you a fair price. Not many things Leica slip through the cracks on eBay these days. You are likely to do worse by selling to, or submitting to the appraisal of, a dealer.

The serial number, as far as I know, is present only on the top plate : usually, the asterisk after a serial number indicated that the s/n was duplicated by the factory for some reason, Can you post some pictures of your 1A ? 1565 is a VERY early number (the first batch of Leicas with Elmar lens, I think) and a camera of this breed is surely very interesting for collectors ; I add also that the writing "Luiz Ferrando" is reknown by Leitz historicians... both Lager and Van Hasbroeck, in their books, do depict Leicas with this marking.

The 1565 on ebay does not have asterisk. It is just how the seller advertised it.

Ebay Leica has some significant usage signs on black parts, you could expect similar usage signs on nickeled parts and especially Elmar looks surprisingly good. Honestly -Too good for me. Lock on bottom plate has expected usage signs, however is not genuine from the time this Leica was produced.

Luigi, yes, Ferrando is well known, cameras sent to him were engraved. However, the Leicas I know with engraving Ferrando are later models, from early 30's.

Some fotos of your Leica Enotslliw would help.

Last March 4 I asked a few questions about this camera and received some timely replies and info. I am accompanying this post with pictures. These pictures are the first pictures I have taken with my Dad’s D Lux 3. Having abandoned my Nikon D60 I have another manual to learn. Bear with me.

What the pictures do not show are the breaks in the covering: the first on the back at the inspection hole and another on the back under the frame counter both from top to bottom. Also a small piece is missing where the bottom plate clips on. The top edge is about 60% bass, the bottom edge is about 75%. The paint on the top is much better than the bottom. I hope the pictures show this. The lens has some clouds and cleaning scuffs but is in good usable shape. The viewfinder is clear. I first reported the serial number as 1565 but further magnification shows it to be 1585. Optometrists Loupes, ordered since the first post, clarified that. One curious thing about this camera is the ring of black paint on shutter button. Were they painted black originally ever?

Also please note the that the inspection hole in the back appears to be a black painted brass button.

Three more pictures of the 1A. The bottom flashed to show intents. The top flashed to show lettering on viewfinder. The back close up to show inspection hole cover.

Unfortunately the serial number indentations are to light to show in a flash.

Is there anything not correct about this camera? As I have decided to sell it, I want to make as full a disclosure as possible. Correct screws etc.

An earlier post mentioned the earliest recorded serial numbers to this South American dealer being much later. Is it possible this is just a record problem or has this viewfinder likely been installed later?

The reduction device for LUG albums seems to be the only way I can make the pictures small enough. Haven't managed it with either my D Lux 3 or my Nikon 60 and I have been at it for days.

Is there anything not correct about this camera? .

Yes, there is. Screws for accessory shoe, rewind lever (all shall be black) and if this is really SN in a range of 15xx lettering on Elmar ring shall be smaller, a bit thicker. Small pictures have too low resolution to determine if the eye lens of viewfinder is corresponding to published SN.

Thank you Jerzy for your eye.

I am including a picture of the viewfinder eyepiece...hope it has enough clarity.

Pacific Rim has a article on the 1A and it specifically compares two 1As... confirms your lens letter note.

I think I want to send this camera off to somebody that can look it over and tell me what is going with it. I will certainly need to have the serial number confirmed. Leica Germany, reputable concern on the east coast? Any suggestions? I am in Florida so I could drive to a location in this state.
