ynp Posted March 24, 2014 Share #2 Posted March 24, 2014 Manual WB off a gray card is better. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

kdriceman Posted March 24, 2014 Share #4 Posted March 24, 2014 I got attacked by a Cape Buffalo when I tried to place the gray card near him. I shoot raw, usually auto WB, and if I can slip in my WhiteBal keychain sized card in on one of the frames I will - especially if it is difficult/multi-source lighting. I then make a final adjustment in post (LR and/or Photoshop). One of the Leica Academy instructors suggested shooting raw, picking a color temperature - say 5500 - and sticking with it, then make a final adjustment in post. This way all your files are consistent coming into your post processing software. This process works fine, however sometimes I will shoot raw+jpeg so I want the JPEGs to be as close to correct as possible! therefore I usually go with Auto. LocalHero1953 Posted March 24, 2014 Share #5 Posted March 24, 2014 I find auto WB is good enough for most circumstances, both natural and artificial - good enough that I don't worry about setting anything else. I make adjustments in PP. The M240 is far better than my M9 was; I have no experience of the M240 before the latest firmware upgrade. If I have time, and especially for portraits, I will take a shot of a ColorChecker Passport: when I do have problems, it's with mixed lighting or a dominant strong colour, and the whole passport card can be more useful than just a white balance card. Bill W Posted March 25, 2014 Share #6 Posted March 25, 2014 Others might not agree but I have always used auto since the M8.2 and worried about other things like focus, DOF, etc. Since I shoot DNG, I can adjust later if needed which is usually very little.
