NotoriousSEG,

When I started out photography in the late 60s I bought a cases with my first two really decent cameras – a Pentax SL and Nikon F2, because… well, I thought I needed them to protect my ‘investment’.

Pretty soon I learned that faffing about getting a camera out of its case or flipping down the case front to take photos was a right, royal pain.

Since then I never, ever bought cases with any of the cameras I have purchased. I find them superfluous and unnecessary.

So, in answer to your question, I have never used a case with any of my Leicas.

I travel light. Out and about I use a Domke F-5XB RuggedWear bag, which is big enough to hold one body, a spare lens, spare battery, the odd filter, cleaning brush, notebook and some film.

The Leica case it's self is kind of ugly. Gray, with white stitching, but with a black marker and a careful use of black shoe polish, it turned out quite nice.

I use Arte di Mano black half case with white stiches, and it cross my mind many times to paint them black.

Wouldn't a black shoe polish leave marks on hands in regular use? I though of some fabric paint instead, but still didn't figure out the way to do it.

Naked.

I do have a grip which I acquired by mistake. I tried it. It is quite nice to use but not really necessary and makes the camera bigger and more DSLR-like in its handling, defeating one of the big reasons for wanting an M in the first place.

Surely the same applies to half-cases, only more so.

No, I just used tube polish, let dry, buff, repeat. Then let fully dry, buff again. Leather is softer, but no black on my hands during use.

Leica half case - just adds that extra bit of protection and means that I can put it down on a surface or move through crowds with more confidence.

I also find that it gives me just that extra little bit of grip, which is very helpful

Is that the 65mm lens? I have tried it with the 14167 and Leica R-M adapter. I had problems focusing it to infinity. Changed the adapter to a cheap Japanese adapter, and it works fine. No problem with R lenses though. How does it work for you?

naked and without strap, I'm using a small sling bag with A&A double compartments, one for M240 and another for MP with lenses only, i just pull it out to shoot and drop it back like cowboy style.

If you like cowboy style, you might like this.

I have an Angelo Pelle half case for my M240 which I'm less than impressed with (ill fitting and a bit too bulky).

My favorite and most comfortable way to carry my M is with the Really Right Stuff (RRS) L-Bracket and Grip. I find with the RRS setup I can handhold the M at lower speeds and it complements the Thumbs Up I have attached. I can also attach the camera immediately to my big tripod or just screw in my little Leica table top tripod and bullhead.

As a final note, I also generally carry my M in a Billingham bag unless I know I will be shooting (then the bag goes away), and I use a Luigis neck strap at all times.:)

Im new to the M, but have used my 240 a lot the past 8 months. Ive tried the Luigi half case and really dislike it. Bad fit for the camera and just a waste of money, IMO! It makes the camera obese and Ive lso tried his strap and wrist strap. Not too fond of those either.

Ive used the A&A adjustable strap and I find it brilliant.

Since christmas Ive beeen using the A&A xl silk strap, and that is my absolute favorite.

Ive used the thumbs up for a few months also. The price is crazy but no regrets - for me, a must have now.

Evreyone will have their favorites! I feel my setup is now close to ideal

I use a Luigi Case ('Natural Aged Brown' version) which works very well for me. Beautifully handmade, smells nice, the hanging door provides good protection for the screen and the 'soft bump' at the front provides better ergonomics. In addition, Luigi Crescenzi is an excellent gentleman to deal with. Personally, I couldn't be happier.

That's interesting. In my case Angelo Pelle's half case fits my MP perfectly, while the Leica case really doesn't fit at all (the half case is too short, while the front cover is too narrow).

I bought a Mr Zhou black leather half case for my M9 and it served me well. As the purpose of a case is to accept the knocks and scratches which would otherwise mark the camera I could not see any point in spending large sums of money on the more exotic cases.

I found that my case fitted the new M240 perfectly but did obscure some of the controls. A little bit of minor surgery with a Stanley knife produced a satisfactory result. The LV button is obscured but I think that this is true of many other cases.

When I wish to carry the camera more discreetly I use an Optech neoprene pouch which has the advantage of protecting the top plate as well as the lower part of the camera body.

At the time Zhou did not make a case for the new M but he does now.
