Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 23, 2007 Share #1 Posted April 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well i went to a wedding over the weekend and i was not the hired gun this time. Yahoo! But i wanted to take a few shots so I grabbed the 28 cron, 50 lux and 90 apo, SF 24 and ONE M8, yes i broke my own rule no backup. Did not need it though. I sat in a end chair so i can get a couple shots and not move around since i was a guest i was not getting in the way of the hired gun and his wife both shooting Nikon , okay i was laughing. LOL. My mother in laws comment what big camera's they have , my comment yea but they don't tickle. ROTFLMAO Anyway the light was pretty heavily side lit and the SF24 really came in handy for at least some fill light Here is just a decent example of that first one with and than one without Welcome, dear visitor! cbretteville Posted April 23, 2007 Share #3 Posted April 23, 2007 These are interesting Guy, how did you set up the SF24 on the first shot? - Carl
Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 23, 2007 Share #4 Posted April 23, 2007 It even does a decent job as flash only , yes we would all like a flash that can bounce and i certainly hope someone is working on a tiny one to do that but until than it is not to bad, I normally use a Metz 54 into a stofen but I was here not work and just have some fun. The images outside I just set on manual and let it rip at full power and set the camera at 250 at F8 since this was late in the day F8 is about right a hour earlier would have been F11 no question. It's bright here Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! k_g_wolf ✝ Posted April 23, 2007 Share #5 Posted April 23, 2007 Quite a fine location to spend a few hours without being on assignment ! That´s a pretty big garden behind your friend´s mansion. Seems to be too big for a small flash ... The <<fill-in-flash>> worked just fine. Great result. Hope, the hired photog didn´t get envious. Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 23, 2007 Share #6 Posted April 23, 2007 The trick to these non bouncing flashes is just think of them as a fill light and not so much a main. Of course the evening shots not much chance of that but still in bright light with almost any subject even landscape stuff i use the SF 24 for some fill. Something to got out and play with and try some different things
Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 23, 2007 Share #7 Posted April 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Actually was at a golf course and people playing golf at the same time. BTW i think the M8 was pretty quiet , no one gave me the evil eye during the whole ceremony

wparsonsgisnet Posted April 23, 2007 Share #9 Posted April 23, 2007 Guy, I can see the sunlight was very bright, but if it had not been, is it possible and do you use the 24 in a reduced power mode? I have not done any fill flash and would be glad to hear some tips. Nice pix. You must get very bored always making nicely lighted pix.
jaapv Posted April 23, 2007 Share #10 Posted April 23, 2007 Nice moire on the suit Guy . I have been using the SFILL diffuser from Leicagoodies, but lately I found that adding the WA adapter as well makes the results better.
nryn Posted April 23, 2007 Share #11 Posted April 23, 2007 Contrary to many people on this board, perhaps, I really like using flash. It's not easy to get right and I'm still working on getting it down with the M8. I've got a Metz 54MZ-3 and the SF-24D, and I just ordered a mint 40MZ-3i in the hopes that it'll be less ungainly than the 54. I get the best results from the 54 using a lumiquest softbox or the Stofen Omnibounce, and from the SF-24D with the SFILL and as someone just mentioned, the WA diffuser as well. The fill looks really good, Guy. I'd probably want just a little more power output on the outdoor shots (though that last outdoor one looks great), and a little more background on the indoor shots, but I don't think the 24/M8 is capable of either (correct me if I'm wrong--my second curtain flash on the M8/24 hasn't really done a very good job). In any case, it's a great little flash, particularly for these kind of snaps.
jamriman Posted April 23, 2007 Share #12 Posted April 23, 2007 Hi Guy, Did you use Auto or TTL mode? Thanks
Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 23, 2007 Share #13 Posted April 23, 2007 John I used Auto on the inside ones and normally for me i shoot on manual like 1/30 at 5.6 and let the ambient bleed in. Not sure what i set this on( maybe 1/45th) and was a little sauced by this point and just having fun playing around with the 28mm cron. Love this lens I think the SF 24 is a nice little flash with limitations but for the size of it and it's pocketablility is something you can work with and get some decent results. More power will always be better in outdoor stuff but at least it helps
jamriman Posted April 23, 2007 Share #14 Posted April 23, 2007 Guy, Many thanks! I have a 24D and really need to play with it more. I rely mostly on my 35, 50 1.4s and the nocti. Do you think the 28 cron ASPH is better than the 28 asph elmarit?
Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 23, 2007 Share #15 Posted April 23, 2007 John hard to say since i have not shot the elmarit but the Cron is really a beauty of a lens and also has a nice character to it and nice bokeh too wide open plus it is the fastest wide in leica. I really think folks should try different glass and find what apeals to you the best. The images i have seen from the new elmarit do make this a hard decision. I'm sure there are a few folks that have both and can give a little better comparision on the two.

charlesphoto99 Posted April 23, 2007 Share #17 Posted April 23, 2007 I use an SF20 for my M7 - haven't really tried it out yet on M8 which is on vaction to NJ at the moment anyway. But I got really nice results with the SF20 on film with a piece of diffusion material (better known as paper towel) sandwiched inside the wide diffuser and shooting TTL. Haven't tried the 24 TTL but I guess the preflash arrangement kinda sucks. The auto on the 20 is pretty limited (settings jump from f2.8 to f5.6 to f11) so I'm not really sure what to do as far as the M8 is concerned. I do love the size of the flash. Guest stnami Posted April 24, 2007 Share #19 Posted April 24, 2007 Looks like the camera works just fine, but as wedding images they are somewhat on the ordinary side, especially in terms of composition and the shadows on the face......... but each to their own
Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 24, 2007 Share #20 Posted April 24, 2007 Imants go talk to the sun , nothing i could do there and also i was in a seat and could not roam around like I would do if I was the official shooter, which i was not.
