jdlaing Posted March 1, 2014 Share #41 Posted March 1, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Most often a thousand feet I can deal with, but no signal I cannot live with. I trust Leica will realize their ways before I take my MF grip to China. Otherwise I leave it home and take a Garmin. How stupid to have to do that! It's kind of not up to Leica. They buy GPS modules from somebody else. The Garmin and Magellan won't work some places either. A thousand feet is quite a bit off.

A thousand feet is quite a bit off. Agree 1000 feet is too much for many places, but I was thinking of to the SW US where it might not make that much of a difference, even though 10-20 feet is preferred. In towns you need accuracy for sure.

Not always true, the OEM modules I have worked with from Garmin simply gave coordinates to the microprocessor (and worked in China)...what Leica's software decides to do with the information is completely up to them. wlaidlaw Posted March 2, 2014 Share #45 Posted March 2, 2014 I just checked some of the photos I took in India and the M240 GPS is not as accurate as the Garmin and Navtec I use in autos. The errors are anything up to 100m. I reckon my most recent Garmin is accurate to around 5m or maybe even less, which is very impressive. I looked at some photos I took on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, when I knew I was in a station. Now it may be Apple’s mapping software in iPhoto but the position is shown a fair bit to the right of the station, in the trees - see below. I know the GPS must have updated as I was wandering about the station for at least 10 minutes while the locomotive had a drink, with the M240 on all the time. I had been using my image stabilised Olympus EP-5 for the shots taken from the very rattly train. Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! jaapv Posted March 2, 2014 Share #46 Posted March 2, 2014 Doesn’t accuracy depend on how many satellites the GPS sees? I tried the GPS photo app on my iPhone and it was quite accurate, I guess because it additionally uses the iPhone Location Service.

Jaap, Quite near the equator in South India (11º 20’N), where on average the maximum number of satellites should be on view at any one time and wholly out in the open, the MF grip should have been seeing at least three satellites. When I did a classic car rally last year, the organisers provided a turn by turn GPS navigation device called a Trippy. It had a display showing how many satellites it was currently receiving. Even in Switzerland in the mountains it was nearly always 2 and frequently 3 satellites. Wilson
algrove Posted March 2, 2014 Share #48 Posted March 2, 2014 I have a hand help Garmin that also has weather band and alike talkie built-in and it often shows up to 9-11 satellites in view.
Exodies Posted March 16, 2014 Share #49 Posted March 16, 2014 Does the OP have any progress with this problem? I have the same issue (in the People's Republic of Europe). I will take it to the shop tomorrow.
AandW Posted March 16, 2014 Author Share #50 Posted March 16, 2014 It is with Leica in NJ and I expect to hear this week. It sounds like it will either be repaired or replaced. Wayne
Exodies Posted March 17, 2014 Share #51 Posted March 17, 2014 Rats. It isn't the grip - my grip works on another body, another grip doesn't work on my body. I have to re-fall in love with my X1 while my M goes to meet its maker.
AandW Posted March 25, 2014 Author Share #52 Posted March 25, 2014 I received a replacement handgrip from Leica today and it works fine. Instantly the GPS menu was accessable and the symbol showed up in the info screen. It acquired a signal quickly when I took the camera outside. Leica replaced with a new grip (vs repair). Leica NJ was very professional and pleasant to deal with. Wayne
Exodies Posted April 9, 2014 Share #53 Posted April 9, 2014 My M came back yesterday - a cable connector had been left unplugged during repairs after I had dropped the camera. The GPS works now, although it is very slow to recover its position after going in and out of a building. There was no charge for the fix (unlike the 650€ bill I received for my clumsiness). I did a test to find if the Leica MF grip really was slow on picking up a fix, as I felt the same as you. I took a switched on Garmin GPS and the Leica outside at the same time in the UK. The Garmin picked up a fix in about 2 minutes whereas the Leica took up to six minutes, so for some reason it is quite slow. It may be due to the restricted space for aerials. It was definitely quicker in India, which might be due to more satellites being in view, near the equator. It sometimes was as quick as 3 minutes. swamiji Posted April 10, 2014 Share #55 Posted April 10, 2014 Back to China, etc. How does the MFHg know it's in china to turn its self off? It must be able to detect its location even there, which mean. It's in firmware where this is done. So if things change, a firmware upgrade might be able to restore it? There was no charge for the fix (unlike the 650€ bill I received for my clumsiness). unfortunately for me my situation seems to be exactly the same as for Exodies. My grip is brand new, the menu choice is greyed out.My camera was repaired after being dropped at the end of last year too. When I take off the grip, what looks to be the whole socket from inside the camera base just fell out with the grip removal. I shall be checking another camera tomorrow but it looks like my camera is going back to Wetzlar,,,,,, and I wa just there with it a couple of weeks ago for the centennial celebrations. Gaah! I actually tried to buy the grip while there from the new shop there but it was out of stock. Otherwise I might have found this fault while actually 10 metres from the Customer Care folks. Well I shall see if I am correct in what has happened.
wlaidlaw Posted July 3, 2014 Share #58 Posted July 3, 2014 Geoff, Does that mean another battle with and form filling for Aussie customs authorities? Wilson
hoppyman Posted July 3, 2014 Share #59 Posted July 3, 2014 Hi Wilson. Well I have never had any battle with Customs authorities here personally but I was without my M (typ 240) for 3 months after I dropped it and it was slow to go through the Australian repair network before then going to Solms and coming back right at the end of year slow down period. I need to look at another camera at my dealers today to confirm but it appears that the camera will have to go back to Wetzlar. Makes me a bit crazy because I was actually there just a couple of weeks back and I have no less than six studio shoots booked over next few weeks plus I am going overseas to a new destination at the end of August too. My studio flash trigger just self destructed as well!
hoppyman Posted July 4, 2014 Share #60 Posted July 4, 2014 My multi-function grip tested on a new camera at my dealers workes fine. The problem is that the socket in the camera base for the electrical connection is completely detached. Now it just falls out. Possibly undetected impact damage. My camera and lens were repaired for that late last year. Whatever the cause the camera will need to go to Wetzlar.
