tashley Posted April 22, 2007 Share #1  Posted April 22, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Evening All!  I've decided to enter the contest that HP is running... and you should all take a look at it too!  http://www.hypegallery.com/streetphotography/  The idea is that you enter 6 shots in the style of Street Photography. The entries get judged by a Magnum photographer, and some lucky winners get to be exhibited at Arles this year.  So my question is, which six? I've got a shortlist at  http://tashley1.zenfolio.com/p849518220/  and if anyone has time, I would dearly appreciate a view as to which are the best six. You can see them as six individual shots or as a collection.  It's a lot to ask, and I really appreciate the effort anyone might be able to make...  Best to all  Tim

Shootist Posted April 22, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted April 22, 2007 1, 2, 4, 8 and 18. Â I like 1 the best especially with the NO PHOTO sign in the background. Kind of ironic.
Coach Posted April 22, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted April 22, 2007 Hi TIm, My choice is 6; 14, 18, 21, 22, 26 Good luck ! Â Gerard
carstenw Posted April 22, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted April 22, 2007 With Magnum, the story is the important part. I don't know if they will judge like that, but I would say that you should choose either Venice or Barcelona, or something else, and try to focus on showing something about that place, rather than simply taking the best shots out of a diverse set. You have many great shots here, but remember: together they stand, divided they fall. Â My favorites are 4,5,6,8,11.
gilles_lorin Posted April 22, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted April 22, 2007 1, 2, 4, 14, 18 & 26. The boy in 22 is cute, but perhaps a bit too cute for 'streetphotography' so to speak. I visited your portfolio a few weeks ago and I liked no. 2; it reminded me of the picture by Ralph Gibson Leica used at some point, showing the back of a man wearing a hat and overcoat. Your image would be the opposite view, and I could imagine Gibson invisible around the corner taking his shot... Â Send us a postcard from Arles! Â Best, Gilles

tashley Posted April 22, 2007 Author Share #9  Posted April 22, 2007 Thanks to all of you for your time and help, it is much appreciated!  Normally I'm quite good at editing my own stuff but there are times when second (and third, fourth etc) opinions are invaluable and educative.  I hope to get the chance to return your favours...  Best  Tim

hrosell Posted April 23, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted April 23, 2007 If it is necessary to choosel only five, I like 1-5-11-21 (despite being out of the Veneto story) -24. In any case, a very nice set of pictures. Good luck! Â Horacio

Some clear leaders are emerging and I'll post the final set at the end of the process. papimuzo Posted April 23, 2007 Share #15 Â Posted April 23, 2007 From a very basic amateur, I would prefer 4,5,8,11,18. But I liked almost the complete portfolio. Good luck in Arles!

Photoskeptic Posted April 23, 2007 Share #17 Â Posted April 23, 2007 Tim, as this is a very subjective matter, I would go for the b&w's. For me, street shooting is all about black and white - it's basic, it's down to earth and it allows for a bit more interpretation of mood. I would enter this contest myself but I've found all photo contests to be totally dependant on the judge and I've never had much luck with da judge:D I know you are good, but are you lucky? arminw Posted April 23, 2007 Share #19 Â Posted April 23, 2007 I like your pictures very much; but they do look a bit like tourist shots to me, rahter then a set of streetphotography telling a storry about the subject. However I have one favorite , which is #22 Â I also like 2, 4, 8, 13 Â Armin
