I like 28mm lenses on the GXR as they become like 42mm, which is a nice focal length for general shooting. The 15/4.5 on the GXR turns it into a hyperfocal snapshot machine, able to grab almost anything from 2m to infinity at f4.5.

Have been recently having pangs of GAS in terms of thinking about buying a lightish 28 mm lens for the GXR. Was thinking about either a used 28 mm ASPH f2.8 Elmarit or 28 mm Summicron f2 (mark IV). This lens (42mm focal length) together with the CV 15/f4.5 (22.5 m focal length) and 90 mm Tel-Elmarit (135 m focal length) would provide a nice lightweight combo (with good focal length spread) for some of the strenuous walks I have yet to do on my bucket list.

R to M adapter (fotodiox) is 80 bucks. You can get an Elmarit R 28mm for about 500.

Crops (900x800) from the Leica R 180mm and 500mm at the Ricoh GXR.

No sophisticated tripod and ballhead, but with the electronic shutter at 1/400 sec.

Yes, both are soft. They are not sharpened.

The pictures are 100% crops. I have cut a piece of 900x800 out of the raw-picture and saved it in jpg.

My point was to compare the Apo-Telyt 3.4/180 with the 500mm mirror lens.

The mirror lens is said to be not so good.

Also I wanted to see how the electronic shutter behaves.

Interesting is, that in the 500mm picture a false color shows up. A reaction of the electronic shutter?

Do you all find the GXR is a bit soft and needs a little extra sharpening?

Not at all, but then I'm not a big fan of a lot of digital imagery which, to my eyes at least, looks overly sharpened in many cases. Each to his or her own I suppose.

No, not really, in fact I actually seem to find that my M240 seems a bit soft in comparison. For landscape photography, I am actually wondering that despite the GXR only having a sensor area half the size of the M240, you can exploit the added depth of field and also I reckon the cropped sensor is exploiting the better characteristics of the lens on the GXR. At 35 mm focal length, the results of my GXR plus 24 mm f3.8 Elmar seem preferable at times over a 35 mm lens on the M240. The M240 is certainly a great deal better at higher ISO settings than the GXR. Perhaps I need to practice more with the M240.

Bluetit (Blaumeise) with the R 500mm mirror lens, tripod, electronic shutter 1/90 sec.

The bird rotated its head almost 180 degrees.

The GXR is great with the R lenses too, even if it's a less compact set.

Here with the Summicron-R 35.
