jcraf Posted February 9, 2014 Share #5 Posted February 9, 2014 Where do you see it is the same camera? Look closely. Same serial number. However, different sets of photos and the UK listing is ended without bids. Slightly fishy maybe?
doubice Posted February 9, 2014 Share #6 Posted February 9, 2014 UK auction was fraudulent - either an outright fraud or, stolen identity. Actually, the photos were the same in both auctions; the UK ones were smaller and lower quality - obviously copied. The UK seller is also selling used baby clothing and a used 19" TV - hardly something an M9P owner would bother selling on eBay. I would hazard a guess that this was a case of stolen eBay identity - eBay cancelled the listing or the 'real' seller found it and cancelled it him(her)self. If eBay cancels a fraudulent auction it disappears from the website entirely and no trace or history can be found. Most probably the seller cancelled it - there were previous bids which were all cancelled at the same time and can still be seen if one clicks on the bidding history. marcg Posted February 9, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted February 9, 2014 Look closely. Same serial number. However, different sets of photos and the UK listing is ended without bids. Slightly fishy maybe? Actually they are the same photos but cropped. There were a few giveaways - some blemishes - which meant that the pics didn't need close examination. I found out because a took a line from the UK listing and googled it with inverted commas around it - and hit the NY one.
marcg Posted February 9, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted February 9, 2014 And now here's the story. I contacted the eBay seller and asked him if I could collect the camera from him. I expected to get a - "No" Instead he said Yes collection is availablePayment must be via paypal then collection will be arranged Thank you So I then asked him Thank you. Can you tell me why the camera you are selling is the same one which was auctioned on eBay and was sold on the 27th Jan in New York for about $6100? I actually supplied the link but eBay must have removed it. He replied hello i am going to cancel he action there was a job advertised on gumtree basically this man needed someone to list his items for him and he would pay £100 per listing i did have my doubts but now you have just said this, this has confirmed my doubts and obviously must be a scam i message him and said a buyer is asking if they can collect this item he said yes i said can you give me your contact number and address so i can forward this to the buyer when the auctions end and he has not message me back so i will report his user on gumtree i am going to block him and i am going to cancel this listing i am very sorry about this as this is clearly a scam and i would have been me worse off as i would of had to pay back how ever much the item selld for .. but my other listings are my actual items that i own so feel free to have a look at them and i will NOT be attempting to list items on behalf of anyone again sorry for the inconvenience And that explains why the auction was closed. There were actually a number of bids and it had already gone to almost £2k with 19 hours to run. I had my reservations about hacked accounts etc. I run a large UK consumer help forum and I have come across this before. People answer ads in Gumtree etc to become eBay Listers. They receive photos of the items, list them for sale. The money is forwarded to the Scammer's Paypal account. If the Mule is lucky they get their promised commission - but probably not. The buyer doesn't get their goods. They are refunded by Paypal and Paypal proceeds against the Mule - who is normally an impecunious idiot and who then has their credit file rubbished, and spend the rest of their lives trying to deal with legal proceedings, repayment instalments, debt collectors, bailiffs - you-name-it. It seems incredible, doesn't it that some people fall for this kind of thing but they do. A couple of years ago, we found that Listing jobs were being advertised in UK Job Centres!! For non-Uk people, these are bureaux, run by the state, to deal with benefit claimants and to help unemployed people find work. For many people, Listing jobs might have been the first opportunity to earn some money for many years - and they took it. They expected that any job which was advertised by a Job Centre would be legitimate. When the scam broke and they found themselves in trouble they were very shocked. I managed to get it highlighted on BBC Radio 4 MoneyBox and also on ITN. The Job Centre refused to provide someone to be interviewed and simply issued a statement that they were unable to check up on all of the jobs being advertised through them. They washed their hands of it. I discovered months later that the Job Centre was still advertising jobs for eBay Listers.

M. Valdemar Posted February 19, 2014 Share #17 Posted February 19, 2014 I'm not trying to be crass but if you tried to "expose" every crooked auction on eBay you would have a full-time 24/7 career. Just learn to use eBay, do your due diligence, and don't try to save the world from auction thieves. It is an impossible task. You can find thousands of questionable auctions on eBay every single day.

Yes of course you would have a full time job, but it also doesn't hurt to post them on the forum - if it stops a single person in the community from bidding on a fraudulent item, then it is worthwhile. London La Posted February 19, 2014 Share #19 Posted February 19, 2014 hello, last week i posted my M9 for sale on Ebay and had a dodgy buyer from Greece. Time waster and all that - I reported them, so I have listed it again... Leica M9 digital camera body -Black - Boxed 4022243107045 | eBay So mine is real - but there is indeed a dodgy M9P above my ad... its a duplicate of another one. I have spent the past 9 days study 'form' on Ebay. I only hope the people buying are savvy. and poor me I was suckered into allowing my fake buyer win..... well he didnt win in the end did he I discovered his game! If anyone wants to buy my camera i am open to offers!! and can retract my sale seeing as no one is bidding yet! Lara
Guest Posted February 19, 2014 Share #20 Posted February 19, 2014 Hi Lara, Professional sellers on ebay add a line, discouraging one-digit-feed-back bidders, not to mention zero ffed-back ones. There's a buy & sell section on this forum btw. Best regards, Simon
