Hi everyone,

I shifted from a M8 and Lightroom to a M9 and would like to get max out of my work. I am confused by two contradictive rapports eg Ken Rockwell who insists on shooting only DNG and use exclusively Aperture for best results where someone like Thorsten Overgaard seems quite happy with shooting DNG AND JPG and uses Lightroom. Any usefull experiences by some of you ? Thanks.

Hi Donald,

I started my Leica addiction with an M8, I was using Aperture for other cameras and found the raw conversion on Aperture to be quite good with Leica as well.

For the past couple of years I've been shooting an M9 and continue to use Aperture 3 with good results. Capture One 7 is also very good and lately I find myself using that more and more often lately.

I've not tried any Adobe product or other program so not qualified to comment on those.

I only shoot DNG...it's a bit more afford (and harddisk space) but it's worth it. Capture One , Aperture or Lightroom...use any application you like - I couldn't see huge differences in the results... Just get free evals and test with your own pics. I personally prefer Lightroom. After developing I export the best pics to JPG, put the RAW files to my (redundant) NAS storage and keep the JPG version on my local hdd.

So you're the guy who takes Rockwell seriously. I knew there was one out there somewhere.

 

Being sensible: It's nothing more than a personal preference. I use RAW+jpeg and Lightroom because I occasionally show images on my iPad and the M9 has no high quality preview embedded in the raw file.

 

Do what works best for you. Ignore the rest. Take pictures.

I have no doubt you could be very successful with RAW (DNG) and or JPG using LR or aperture. I assume you are aware that jpg is a processed image that has already been 'made' in camera and therefore the flexibility to adjust post this process is much more limited. The raw is far better in terms of flexibility and usually the ultimate result as the jpg is essentially processed and fixed from that point, losing the ability to unwind and go back to the raw image.

 

I personally moved from Aperture to LR, I think it is ultimately a little better but they are both good. Leica work with LR it's far more widely used so I'd stay with this to be honest. If you like the jpg and it is already close, why not use it. I do this often with B&W jpg as my import to LR is RAW and B&W jpg, this allows a reference for B&W development and I agree that often the B&W jpg has some qualities to it that mean starting form scratch with the raw may not be needed (The jpg B&W style has some 'qualities' IMO that are actually quite hard to recreate so why waste this, not 'pursit' I know !)

 

Ken Rockwell is more tech junkie and internet income stream, Thorsten is a very well regarded photographer. Check Thorsten's image and Ken's and you will know who to listen to

Consider that Leica now ships with LR. Consider as well that DNG is an Adobe development. I have no doubt that C7 and Aperture are fine for the M9, but if Leica feels that LR is their preferred, that is good enough for me. Any differences between the three can probably be nullified with the sliders.

KR? I guess it is easier to get lollipop colours with Aperture…

In reality all major editing software is not bad at all and you will find your preference in due course. I like to use Photoshop CC, but mainly because I grew into it. Have a go at Capture One too - quite good.
