R8 and DMR

Hi guys,

I've been gone for awhile, been venturing with other businesses than photography. :D

However, still much of a hobby photographer, I've been searching the net for info on the DMR, and before I go and purchase one, I'd like to know if there's any specific "demand" on the R8 body it will attach too?

And R8 will do?

I'd just hate to buy a DMR (If I find one) only to see it won't fit my R8.

Thanks!

The R8 body "might" need some work doing to it in Solms to work with the DMR (some early ones did).

All R9s work with the DMR.

Before you drop your cash on one, be aware of the limitations, servicing, SD card and battery issues. You need to know what you are getting into, but they still take great photographs in the right hands.

Thanks Andy, is there anyway of knowing if mine will take the DMR?

No. Mine was a bit temperamental to start with, but worked fine once I had got the hang of it.

I don't think that you can tell by the Serial Number.

I vaguely recall asking Leica at MK (when they were still there) about this, and got the reply that you can't tell from the serial number.

In the DMR era thugh someone once said that if an R8 was ever sent in to Leica for work to be done on it, then they would as a matter of routine ensure that it was up to date to take the DMR. (Mine went in for film scratching issues under the 5 year warranty, so I presume it is OK, though in the end I never bought a DMR.)

I have a later model R8. I was considering getting a DMR myself. However, considering what Andy stated above I decided not to get it.

Instead I got myself the M and the Leica adapter to use my R lenses. The problem with this option is that it is not easy to use any lenses longer that 100mm - maybe I need more practice. needless to say, using EVF is not fun

Having been an M Leica user for years, M6, M8 and M9, I have never used an R glass on an M camera... Will this adapter give rangefinder coupling too?

*Edit, just saw this is something new, needs the electronic viewfinder too.

I've used R lenses on the new M but I REALLY dislike it ALLOT, I only use it for Macro, but never used the 35-70 lens in 'normal' use... appart from 1 time, just to try it pictures were good, but I didn't like the Liveview, and EVF style shooting...

Here are some pictures of the M (Typ 240) with R lens:

Here is a set of pictures with the DMR and R8:

Beware of:

Max SD card size: 2GB

Some R8's don't work, (the early ones) not sure how you can check if it's compatible, someone else might know?

Batteries are no longer available but a guy can repack them, making them last a while again!

This has all the ingredients for an expensive mistake. It maybe considered sacriligeous to say it but a Sony A7 may suit your needs more, at less cost and that advantage of modern technology. I'd like to have that combo mice elf but it's too costly and too risky a diet for me.

I bought my DMR in 2006. I just sold it with one of my 3 R8 bodies. I NEVER had any issue. The R8 is an amazing camera. I'd say it is the best film camera I have ever used & owned.

Same here. I have had 3 DMRs since 2006 (one got stolen in a burglary). All have worked faultlessly. Personally I prefer the R9 to the R8 (I have both), but they are both fantastic to use a fully manual camera.

My DRM experienced problems while we were traveling in the Falklands and the Atacama. I sent it to Leica. they had to replace the motherboard. All has been well since.

My R8 needed to visit Leica along with the DMR for final fitting. I had the R8 for five or six years before getting the DMR.
