Well I don't really have a back up but I do use a 2nd body which is now the Sony A7. I use the M with the 28 cron asph and the A7 with the Sony/Zeiss 55/f1.8, this is my to go setup I will also carry the WATE, Elmarit-M 90 and Cv 35/f1.2 v2 in the bag. The WATE I use on the M and the other 2 on the A7. Since getting the A7 and 55 my 50 lux asph hasn't seen the light of day!!

I also have the X-pro1 but since getting the A7 I have only really used it occasionally with the 14mm/f2.8 (21mm equivalent) lens

I have no backup camera. I treat my M carefully, and don't expect it to fail me.

Should it fail, it's not the end of the world. Until it's repaired, I'll enjoy life without taking images. But then again, photography is my hobby, not my livelihood.

I can relate to this, and insurance adds even more comfort. But if I'm on trip intended primarily with photography in mind, I'll want a back-up body, compatible with available lenses, just in case something breaks, gets stolen, etc. Wouldn't want to waste the trip or the dollars. In my case the M8.2 works fine as back-up to the M.

thanks all, im looking to get a good compact camera as sencond unit to M. olympus or fuji.

I'm surprised that no-one has suggested the Sony RX-1. If you are comfortable with a fixed lens 35mm camera, and aren't price sensitive, it is an interesting option.

That is the crux of the discussion, do you want a camera that is just there in case, like a spare wheel or one that adds to your photography, yet can, more or less, take over as well.?

As a back up I continue to use my first Leica: M6 classic in chrome with a lovely grey dot. Purchased new it will turn 20 this summer. Actually it is much more than merely a back up.

My extras for creativity enhancement: Holga TLR and Zero 6x9 Multi-Format Deluxe.

My Olympus EP-5’s trick that the M240 cannot do is 5 axis image stabilisation. This means I can use my Leica Vario Elmar 80-200 on the Olympus without a tripod, monopod or balancing the camera on something. With the M240, I find around 150mm is the zoom limit for really sharp pictures unsupported unless it is a really bright day and you can jack the shutter speed up to around 1/750 or above. I know I don’t have steady hands and others will be able to manage but I can’t. This is why I don’t take my M9 or M8 as a back up. If I am going to take an M as a back up, it will be my M4.

The only time I take other digital M’s as additional camera(s), is if I am taking the stills on a movie or theatre shoot. The purpose then is to be able to quickly change focal lengths without messing about swapping lenses. Then typically I would have a 28mm on the M9, a 50mm (Planar or Noctilux) on the M240 and 75mm (100mm EFOV) on the M8 for face close ups. Of course, nowadays I can always put my Zeiss Vario Sonnar 28-85 on the M240, which achieves the same and is even simpler.

If by compact you mean with a fixed lens I would go for the Fuji X-20. If you want to be able to change lenses I would go for the fuji XE-2 with the fuji adaptor. If you want FF then the Sony A7 will give you a very capable machine in a small package

I have a simple policy: my back-up camera is always my second best camera. That can vary according to need. In most cases it is an obsolete M or it could be the X1 where its unique qualities come into play. (Compactness; simplicity; live-view; relative close focusing; image quality)
