Mr_Jones Posted January 13, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 13, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) My M9p is currently with Leica having the sensor replaced, I decided to have the top and bottom plate renewed at the same time, as they have a fair bit of cosmetic damage. I'm thinking of selling it once the repairs are completed as I am happy with the M. I can choose to have it renewed in Black or Chrome, it costs about the same. Which one is more popular on the used market? Of course I have my own ideas from a bit of research but I am interested to hear some other opinions/experiences. Advertisement Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Hi Mr_Jones, Take a look here M9p Chrome or Black, which is more popular ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jip Posted January 13, 2014 Share #2 Posted January 13, 2014 Usually what I've seen with the M8 and M8.2 is that the Chrome version is more rare, and thus more sought after... Black M8 +/- 1100 euro, while a Chrome M8 fetches 1500-1600 at dealers i've seen.
jip Posted January 13, 2014 Share #3 Posted January 13, 2014 I've seen black M9-P's but never seen a chrome M9-P in real life I think... I now have a chrome M 240 myself. I like it.
Paul J Posted January 13, 2014 Share #4 Posted January 13, 2014 I've heard dealers say that black sells best. I prefer chrome myself. Out of interest how much is it to do?
Mr_Jones Posted January 13, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted January 13, 2014 It's about £600 to renew it, roughly £120 more to change the colour because the hotshoe would need to be changed. I got the impression that the chrome version fetches a better price but the black is more popular. Slightly confusing but based on supply and demand I guess. I also have the M240 in chrome and like it but the M9p in black is very stealthy. People still notice it's worth something though!
wattsy Posted January 14, 2014 Share #6 Posted January 14, 2014 I'm not sure you'd get the £720 back in extra secondhand value, at best you might break even. The difference in price between a mint and a scabby M9P is probably less than you anticipate.
earleygallery Posted January 14, 2014 Share #7 Posted January 14, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'd agree with Ian, you're unlikely to profit from such an exercise. I also think it's more ethical to sell the camera in it's 'original' used state, so purchasers can get some idea of the use it's had.
tobey bilek Posted January 14, 2014 Share #8 Posted January 14, 2014 Black in USA, bright chrome in Europe so says Leica years back. I bought what I want and do not worry.
Paul J Posted January 14, 2014 Share #9 Posted January 14, 2014 I agree, £600 may be reasonable if you are going to keep it but since you're going to sell it I don't think it will be worth it.
Mr_Jones Posted January 14, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted January 14, 2014 It's borderline in terms of the re-sale value, interested earley that you see it as a deceit. When I originally advertised it I had all kinds of low ball offers and they were at least £600 below asking because of the damage. I did wonder about replacing the base plate, that adds enough (£220) to make it less likely to be profitable. On the other hand a used baseplate might fetch half that if someone needs a replacement. As far as fixing the damage to the top which I bought it with, I see it as a decent thing to do rather than un-ethical. I'd have thought that buyers would prefer to have an M9p with a brand new top plate and sensor, CLA'd by Leica and my description would include that information. It has less than 10,000 clicks so it's very little used anyway. If I were all for keeping it I might have it in chrome, but I loved the black too so I'd be hard pressed to choose. The damage didn't bother me in fact it made me more likely to take it everywhere.
marknorton Posted January 14, 2014 Share #11 Posted January 14, 2014 Just my opinion of course, but with both black and chrome, I think the chrome M9-P is the most handsome digital M of them all.
Mr_Jones Posted January 14, 2014 Author Share #12 Posted January 14, 2014 Having both is definitely the smart option. The chrome version looks great in photos, I've never seen one in the flesh. The chrome M does seem a little bit flash compared to the black M9p though.
marknorton Posted January 15, 2014 Share #13 Posted January 15, 2014 Worth repeating that the silver chrome is much harder wearing than either the black chrome or black paint, both of which wear along the edges and corners. You might like the effect, I do not.
Bill W Posted January 17, 2014 Share #14 Posted January 17, 2014 Personally I think you will find it easy to sell it in the chrome and CLA'd. ON ebay they seem to command a premium price. Not sure if they are getting what they are asking for them.
NightSun Posted January 19, 2014 Share #15 Posted January 19, 2014 I would second the opinion in the last two posts. I was in the market for a second-hand M9, and decided on the chrome M9P finally, as it has the most durable outfit (and I admit, for me also the most appealing from among the available options), which usually comes at a premium price compared to black versions of M9/M9P. Of course all this comes down to personal taste as well, since someone who likes the black finish so much that does not care about brassing will undoubtedly will choose that one. I could have got along with the black, too, but the quick brassing at edges reported by other users drove me away.
hepcat Posted January 21, 2014 Share #16 Posted January 21, 2014 Don't listen to all those other folks who've posted here. I like black paint, so of course it's the ONLY way to go.
Mr_Jones Posted January 21, 2014 Author Share #17 Posted January 21, 2014 Decided to go for the simple option and have the black top replaced. Everything else stays the same. When I asked Leica if they could complete a transformation to chrome they did provide the price but it kept rising in an effort to provide a mint copy! At least I can keep it if I wish without feeling that it will be steeply reducing in value from mint condition. Also complements the M in chrome as some days a stealthy camera is a nice option. I'm convinced the chrome would have sold faster and for more money, just not quite enough to justify the expense. I've also decided that I should give it some time and try to use the M9p daytimes for a while as I love the CCD sensor look and the only major change for me with the M is high iso performance.
