Is this backfocus?

Hi all,

I'm starting to pull out my hair (what's left of it at least). I'm just not getting sharp images, you know that "tack" sharp that I've seen posted here so often. First I thought it was my eyesight that has gone out of whack and got the 1.35 magnifier with diopter adjustment from Megaperls - it certainly does make it easier to focus the 90mm. Still the images that I'm after elude me.

So I took the Focus Test Chart and photographed it at 45 degrees, from a distance of about 2m, tripod mounted the M8, fired the shutter via self timer to minimize any chances of shake. Here are the results.

These are 100% croppings of the focus test sheet. First Image is taken with the 90mm f/4.0 Macro-Elmar (without macro attachment), at f/4.0 and a speed of 1/8.

Second image is taken with a cv40mm f/1.4 Nokton, at f/1.4 and a speed of 1/60. Please let me know what you guys think, any advice would be real welcome.

Disregarding whether the images are back focusing or not, you can see how shallow the depth of field is at these focal lengths/apertures, just a few millimetres. It's very easy to miss focus. It's just one of those things when you're using fast lenses close up. Personally I'd put it down to operator error.

The CV looks sloppy throughout, maybe just poor contrast wide open but I really don't see a point of great focus. The Macro Elmar may be off by around 13mm.

Operator error is possible: try the test a few more times, see if it is consistent, and get a friend to try it too.

RF adjustment is also possibly an issue. Do you have other lenses that hit the target? If so, test them at 10m, 20m and infinity.

The tack sharp IS there, really! It can just be a needle in the haystack sometimes...

Good luck!

Tim
