Umm… Customer Service is not in the main building but a few Kms away… I am a bit puzzled about the shop - the factory is on an industrial area.

 

Like I said the shop is around the corner from CS. I am not talking about the main building. Stop confusing an obvious screw up of major proportions to me!

Well, it sounded like you were sitting in the lobby as you mentioned senior management being around in an earlier post. In my experience they seldomly visit CS.

I do think the Leica signed quality cards are a nonsense when these errors are occurring. That said, my Mercedes AMG has a signed plate on the engine of the person who built it and I had hoped to see him when I visited AMG in Affalterbach to thank him for this work - his engine has been faultless, the rest of the car has been an unreliable nightmare.

 

My new AMG cornered funny. I just assumed that it was the fact that Mercedes wasn't ever going to feel like Porsche in the corner. Then, I noticed that the paint was different in the engine compartment and bolts were painted over and paint was cracked on them.

 

Took it back to the Mercedes dealer and they assured me it wasn't a crashed new car... then they checked it out and scratched their head. They discovered that the entire front of the car was repainted and the paint from the doors forward was thicker by a factor of 3X from the rest of the body. Also, some of the front components were not original MB parts.

 

My dealer called me few days later to let me know that a representative from MB North America flew in from California to look at my car. He assured me that the paint in the engine comportment and the cornering problems were all ok. After examining the car he went silent and needed to talk with MB Germany.

 

A few days later my dealer told me that my car was being replaced after 10,000 miles and I'd get a new AMG. I beat the shit out of my car for the next two weeks and returned it to the dealer and received a brand new AMG with 12 miles on it. My rear tires had almost no tread on them when I returned it!

 

I have no idea what happened to my original car. The new one had no cornering shimmy at all. The new one had a signature plate on the engine and has had zero problems from the engine to the complete car and is 9 years old now with 50,000 miles. I have never owned a car this long.

 

I also had it modified by Renntech in Florida in the second year. Raced a Ferrari last month and pulled away at 135 mph. What an amazing street car. I'll keep it until it dies. I'd love to meet the guy that hand built my AMG engine and signed it. I couldn't care less about the guy that signed my Leica cards.

That is a bit like what happened to me in the 1970’s. We had had to do a very expensive repair to the 15th century Sussex cottage we were living in at the time, replacing the entire stone slab roof with an identical but non-sagging and leaking one and were as a consequence, feeling rather poor. I traded down from my very expensive to run Kremer 2.6L 911S to a new Fiat X1/9, which were getting very good write ups at the time. For my work at the time, I was having to drive twice a week from near the south coast up to Norwich, a 300+ mile round trip and the Kremer ate petrol and tyres. My X1/9 was horrible. It did not handle consistently, was slow and the paint was very poor. I had an excellent Fiat dealer (very unusually) who went to a lot of trouble to trace the build history of the car.

 

It had been built over two years before I got it, as a LHD car and sat on grass in a disused airfield outside Turin, unsold. Then when the RHD model was announced and they were in short supply, this one was taken back to the rectification dept at Fiat Turin, where it was roughly converted and updated to the latest RHD model but not using the correct suspension parts, which needed slightly different pick up points on the body shell. It had the older 1300cc engine not the stated 1500 cc engine. I finally got a grudging 95% refund from Fiat when it was 9 months/12,000 miles old, and had had to have holes rusted right though the bodywork repaired. I would guess it would have had to be scrapped within a couple years more. I replaced it with an ex-demo Saab 99 Turbo from the same very helpful dealer.

 

Now that I am older and wiser, I think I would have negotiated a 100% refund plus punitive damages :-)

Not sure how customers are responsible.

 

The idea that Leica are worried about a few people on a forum moaning about how long their (insert product) is taking for delivery and therefore rushing stuff out of the factory without checking them is nonsense IMHO.

 

Clearly there are issues and from the various cases reported on this forum it's not just in one area, it's in the service dept., despatch, production and I'd say in their supply chain.

 

Hopefully someone at Leica is dealing with all of this - it's probably a combination of factors including staff training and product knowledge.

 

Those nice little hand written tags which imply that your item has been hand made, with love care and attention to detail, clearly count for nothing. They might as well not bother with them, that'll save some time on the line.

Phew - at least my new 18mm Super Elmar-M seems OK as far as I can check it with my M9. Taking a row of books diagonally at f3.8, the sharpest seems to be the one I focused one. The final check will be with my M240 when it comes back from Solms. Of course, focus is not exactly critical with this lens and after you shut it down to f5.6, focusing is barely required. You can just leave it set at the hyper focal distance of around 3M.

.... my original one had inoperative shutter blades and was stuck wide open ...... which was initially very confusing as every shot was at 1/4000 sec ........ and a strange persistent OOF area mid left of the image ...... exchanged by Mayfair with grovelling apologies .... which I have to say I enjoyed immensely considering their usual superior attitude ....... ;)

If you met the guy who signed your APO50, which you returned due to CVF, you would be disappointed since he/she was 22 years old and knew nothing about lens technology, assembly or anything else about lenses, but could talk you silly over the virtues of a smart phone.

Considering the cases where defective gear was shipped I am beginning to think that all Leicas are defective at birth. Something like Original Sin. Would it help to Baptize them? Really, what more can we do?

They recalled all of them back for those wanting to send them back due to lens design issues if I recall. Too many recalls since that one so I cannot recall. I am sure others will have a better explanation than I.
