how to remove M adapter from 5 cm screwmount Elmar?

Could the experts please tell me how to remove an M-mount adapter from my 5 cm f3.5 Elmar screwmount lens, just received from an eBay purchase? This lens was being used on an M2. I don't want to damage anything and wish to use the Elmar on my IIIf camera.

Maybe the M adapter just screws on and off? Are there any retaining screws or clips to remove?

Normally you can use a Leica rear cap as a wrench to get a better grip on the adapter - perhaps a cheap generic cap in case it is really stuck and harms the cap.

I've also heard of people using loctite to attach the adapter permanently, in which case...

You run the risk of ruining you rear caps if you use them to remove an adapter (i have several spoiled by trying this.)

The easiest and safest way is pressing the release button on your M and turn the lens against the clock -the lens will unscrew from the adapter, so you can remove it without applying force.

When in London last, I bought a LTM adaptor from Red Dot for my 5cm Summicron. The shop very kindly provided an endcap that three small bosses on it, which engage with the three recesses in the adaptor (see attached photos). Have not needed to use this facility (yet!) but it could prove very useful.

Yes they are very useful and old lenscaps have them, but they are meant to remove the adapter from the M camera.

To remove the lens from the adapter simply unscrew it when mounted on the M body, if it is very tight do so in the unlocked position not to damage the lens lock.

Whoops - you are of course absolutely right! Brain fade on my part... :o

Thank you "pop" from near Basel and others for good advice. Once I knew how it was supposed to work, I unscrewed the M adapter easily from my screwmount Elmar - it was not glued (!) or too tight. I'll post my next question in a new topic.
