Advertisement Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Hi Jjbru, Take a look here Number of shots with a leica M. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Bobitybob Posted January 3, 2014 Share #2 Posted January 3, 2014 Unfortunatly you can't! The M generates a unique number for each image and as yet no one has been able to crack this. Unless Leica releases the algorithm that they use to generate this number it could be sometime before anyone produces software to generate the number of shutter actuations. Jjbru Posted January 4, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted January 4, 2014 great answer, I heard that it was possible on M9 but never saw anything about the M240. Thank you so I ca stop searching around:cool:
jaques Posted January 5, 2014 Share #4 Posted January 5, 2014 it is definitely possible on the M9 and the M8. I think it is weird that it can no longer be done... It is a shame for the second hand market as buyers won't be able to tell how many shots a camera has made- and sellers with low actuation numbers will not be able to prove it to potential buyers... Blame video and live view. The shutter opens quadruple as it used to. The only thing shutter activations was ever any good for was the shutter. On an expensive camera the repair cost, if any, is minor.
satijntje Posted January 5, 2014 Share #6 Posted January 5, 2014 I believe that solms can put the M in a kind of Service mode like it leaked out from the M8. In this service mode the Nr of attn can be read out. Just a matter of time before somebody finds this out or it leaks........ John
Guest Posted January 5, 2014 Share #7 Posted January 5, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) ... Would Leica present a car without mileage indicator, it would be unmarketable.
DMJ Posted January 5, 2014 Share #8 Posted January 5, 2014 Would Leica present a car without mileage indicator, it would be unmarketable. Why do car manufacturers put a mileage indicator on their vehicles? Apart from getting you back to service the thing it offers them no advantage. They made their money selling you the car new, it is only to your advantage knowing the mileage when you come to sell it second hand as they get no monies from that. So as Leica have a very specialist low production product (no competitor doing it) to them it makes no financial sense to add a 'mileage indicator'. Guest Posted January 5, 2014 Share #9 Posted January 5, 2014 ... Leica should have a strong interest in the aspect, that photographers can sell their Leicas as well as possible. Only with high revenues on the used market, many customers can afford the next purchase of the latest Leica camera. Stranger still appears the secrecy, as the number of shots can be read internally of course.
dante Posted January 5, 2014 Share #10 Posted January 5, 2014 Leica sells refurb and demo cameras, so they actually have an interest in suppressing the information. The idea that counters help resale value is bunk. Buyers use those numbers to drive down prices. It might benefit the 1% who never use their cameras. Guest Posted January 5, 2014 Share #11 Posted January 5, 2014 ... It is astonishing, how many M8 and M9 are offered with shutter numbers below 10,000. Especially with refurb and demo cameras, the number of shots would be important for buyers, if Leica does not install a new shutter already. Otherwise, second-hand buyers will count every scratch again.
thighslapper Posted January 5, 2014 Share #12 Posted January 5, 2014 You can blame me ....... I had my M9 replaced after I found my Leica main dealer 'as new' ex demo camera turned out to have 6k actuations........ Got a brand new one as a replacement after I complained ...... Effectively at a 15% dIscount at a time when they were unobtainable ...... ....... Anyway shutter actuations is a pretty hopeless way judging camera use/abuse or wear and tear....... Guest redge Posted January 6, 2014 Share #13 Posted January 6, 2014 Does Leica say at what point a shutter should be replaced due to number of times it's been triggered? P.S. I hate the word actuation
