kwpatlaw Posted December 30, 2013 Share #1 Posted December 30, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all. I have been a reader and rare writer of the LUF for several years. I read it almost everyday. I own an M7 and several leica lens that I wholeheartedly enjoy. I love using the rangefinder camera system even if my family thinks I take too long composing, focusing etc. I have a 1.0 Nocti, 75 lux, 50 cron, 50 lux, and a 35 cron. Like many of you, I have a lot invested in my kit. I am ready ( I think ) to go digital with the new M. I realize this forum spends much of its space discussing " issues and problems" within the digital family of cameras. My question is, do you believe the vast majority of M (240) owners are happy with this new camera ? Is it a reliable camera for most ? I appreciate your thoughts. brusby Posted December 30, 2013 Share #2 Posted December 30, 2013 Not me. Love mine. And I don't care if it's not as cheap as other cameras or not the absolute best at certain things. It's capable of making beautiful images and the pleasure I get from using it, which is considerable, far outweighs any negatives.
Mr_Jones Posted December 30, 2013 Share #3 Posted December 30, 2013 I was surprised how much I prefer it to the M9p. It is great in my opinion. Lots of small improvements but the increased DR and ISO range has completed the package for me. Live view is a great option to have. The shutter is sublime. Also much prefer it to the A7r which is not as well made. I do prefer the M9p sensor at base ISO though, just like the CCD look.

Ken I don't know if most M owners are happy - maybe Leica does. But I for one I'm very happy with mine and I've experienced it to be 100 % reliable. I suppose the differences between film and digital are fundamental and enough is written about this already. My Nikon FE is also different from my D800. And ... I'd pick my M over my D800 any time. Ken Compare the number of M bodies that Leica dealers are selling with the number that are appearing on the second hand market - I'd say the majority of users are more than happy! Dikaiosune01 Posted December 31, 2013 Share #6 Posted December 31, 2013 My widdle testimony and struggle to justify the M240: I never used or owned a M8 or a M9. The M is the only Digital camera I need. I was quite apprehensive to spend all that money on a camera. I do not regret it. I still primarily use a M3 and a MP on a very regular basis. I enjoy the way my hand and eye are tuned to the 'rangefinder experience.' Choosing the exposure, focusing and exposing. The M typ 240 Digital camera is the only digital camera that allows me to shoot the same way as my other Leica Cameras. I wouldn't be able to shoot the same way that I would like with any other camera. I was asked for a friend to shoot a friendly football match; and he handed me his D300. I couldn't get use to the auto focus. I felt much better anticipating the plays and pre-focusing. I put down his camera, and put the M to my eye and gave him a quick edit. The first reason I adore my M camera is because I can shoot the way I feel comfortable. The second reason I adore my digital M 240, is because I have a huge backlog of film I need to develop and scan. The 240 allows me to keep shooting while I catch up on my many undeveloped rolls and sheets. And because I'm quite frugal with the way I shoot my M3, there aren't an excessive amount of pictures of my shoes cluttering my hard drive. While I was waiting for my M (I was waiting for 14 months), I had a big choice to make. Either get a digital system (i.e. Canon or Nikon) or keep waiting for the M. I didn't like the prospect of having to carry an extra system. I'm glad I got the M.

MarkP Posted December 31, 2013 Share #8 Posted December 31, 2013 I own the M9, Monochrom and M(240). I have no regrets whatsoever purchasing the M. Improved output over the M9: More detail and resolution in files Improved dynamic range (DR) I prefer the colour which is to me is more neutral More tonality in B&W conversions (probably due to increased DR Files are flatter due to increased DR but are much more robust in PP Improved features leading to improved photographs over the M9: Improved rangefinder allows more accurate focusing EVF (despite it's limitations) allows increased versatility and focus accuracy when using some lenses wide open where there is very shallow DOF and/or focus shift (ie 1.0/50 Noctilux or 3.4/135 APO-Telyt) Improved user experience (ie just nicer to use): Improved rangefinder I really like the red frame-lines I really like the shutter It's a much more refined device Improved versatility: Other lenses, esp Leica-R - for me the 28-90 Vario-Elmar and 28-PC Live view for landscapes and macro (not used much at all to date) Video - not used yet but as an amateur photographer having that option to take a quick video at a family function or whatever is very convenient These mean that I don't need a second camera system as this now fulfils all of my wants & needs What annoys me (but not deal breakers) Italian flag artefact still a mild issue with some lenses Auto ISO stuff up EVF still a bit primitive but works for me ISO setting display on back screen very difficult to see sometimes c/w the layout on the M9 and should be in white not red text. Having said all of that, I still prefer the results I get from the Monochrom

01af Posted December 31, 2013 Share #10 Posted December 31, 2013 My question is, do you believe the vast majority of M (Typ 240) owners are happy with this new camera? Yes, I believe the vast majority of M (Typ 240) owners are happy with this new camera. At least I am. Totally. Had an M9 before which I also was very happy with but the new M is so much better. I still have the M9 but hardly touch it anymore. That said, I did hear from a few persons who returned their new M only a few days after receiving it. But I think that was just buyer's remorse more than anything else.
Garrett Lynch Posted December 31, 2013 Share #11 Posted December 31, 2013 Coming from someone who spent a very long time saving (26 when I got my M9P and M) and could always use the funds somewhere else, I have zero regrets. I'd be lying if I would question the costs here and there, but then I take it out and shoot a few shots and it's when I view those photos on my iMac when I say to myself "Wow, these are beautiful." Having the M9P for a few months before selling to fund my preorder for the M and now shooting with my M for 8 months, despite the magic of the M9, the M is truly a terrific upgrade. bephoto Posted December 31, 2013 Share #12 Posted December 31, 2013 no way are you kidding!??!!? I'm shooting most of my editorials now with M instead of Hasselblad. its an awesome camera for studio and location. I hated every second of M8 and never bought M9 cuz if I wanted BAD ISO performance I would at least shoot it on 39/50MP Hasselblad. Leica M is great. Leonil Posted December 31, 2013 Share #13 Posted December 31, 2013 The only regret I have for paying off the rest of my receipt is the bad customer service I get from the dealers. Its either they lie to me, or they don't know anything and worse, they raise the prices on me even though I locked in the price with my order. THEN they tell me "we don't do that" but I have both receipts that prove that wrong. Other than that, Ive been using an M240 that belongs to a friend and I see no problems in skin tones and no real issues with the camera. I put my 50 summicron (silver uncoded) and I haven't come across the problem of light leaks, maybe its noticeable in other lenses. I don't know - but if its a style of shooting you are after and DO shoot regularly in bright conditions with a 30 second exposure, then I'll demand an exchange for a body that doesn't do that - you paid good money for it - you expect it to shoot in that kind of condition - otherwise, Leica would not have offered a bulb mode or a 30 second shutter And if someone ever tells you "well, its a limitation of the camera" or "learn to live with it" then ignore them - Go to the dealer (like I have) and ask, why they sold you a camera with a Bulb setting and it doesn't work because of light leaks. And that's what 1 friend in Hong Kong did at the new Leica store and he sat there in the store shooting bulb until he was given a body that did not have leaks - he went through 2 of them (his and a replacement he tested) Leica needs to be held accountable for stuff like this. If this happened to Canon or Nikon, there would be a recall, and Leica recently posted a 250 million Euro profit, doubling from the year before, and that means it can afford to give you a properly made camera Having said that - out of the thousands and thousands of M240s sold, and still being made, there are only less than 2 dozen complaints Ive heard on the internet, that's less than 1% failures of the system. The rest are just issues that can become addressed later.

This issue only arises with very long exposures with a bright light source such as the sun on the lens mount/flange. An uncommon scenario. For me this is not a reason to dump the camera. Dannybuoy Posted December 31, 2013 Share #15 Posted December 31, 2013 No I don't regret my M purchase. I had a few moments of buyers remorse but that's only natural with a purchase of this expense. I've had a fair few bugs and issues with LV but I just love the quality and look of the photos it produces. I'll be keeping this camera for a long time. jaapv Posted December 31, 2013 Share #17 Posted December 31, 2013 Well, it was a tossup between a nice watch and this camera. In the end the M won. I probably have less regrets than I would have had with buying the watch. The M was considerably cheaper and takes better photographs…. But then again the watch will still be nice and worth quite a bit in the far future and…. Hmmm… an unanswerable question I fear.
