egibaud Posted April 19, 2007 Share #1 Posted April 19, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I had a summilux35 but due to back focusing problems I sent it back. I have an Elmarit 90 a Cron 50 a CV 15 I have been waiting for a 28 Elmarit that takes ages to arrive. And I really miss something inbetween the 15 and 50. I have the possibility to buy a Cron 35 NOW! - who would say?: 1- it is better to wait for the 28 2- get the 35 although it is close to my cron 50 3- get the cron 35 and then the Elmarit 28 when available 4- get a CV35 and the Elmarit 28 5- get a Zeiss35 and the Elmarit 28 The third option is tempting but, aside of money, who would say I'll have a dead lens in my bag for ever? and if so which one of the two is likely not to be used ever? the 28 or the 35? Complicated explanation and decision. Thanks for your help, Eric
Advertisement Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Hi egibaud, Take a look here hard to decide. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
DaveEP Posted April 19, 2007 Share #2 Posted April 19, 2007 It's got to be personal choice. I have a 28 Elmarit and a VC 35/2.5. The 35 does not get used very much - not because it's a CV - but because I happen to prefer 28mm on the M8. So, for me, the 35mm sits around and is almost never used. Other people prefer 35mm and never use 28mm. You bought the 35 lux for a reason - and I assume it was either for the f-stop or for the focal length - or both. If it was for the focal length.... what changed?
egibaud Posted April 19, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted April 19, 2007 You bought the 35 lux for a reason - and I assume it was either for the f-stop or for the focal length - or both. If it was for the focal length.... what changed? What happened? As I was new to M cameras I had to buy lenses anyway, my idea was to get 15cv - 35 lux and 75 cron. What happened is that the 35lux came first and it was back focusing. I would have changed to 35cron but there were no 75 cron available.... So I ended up deciding to change my range of lenses. 15 - 28 - 50 - 90 as it would give me some extra at both ends. After using the M8 for a couple of month, I realise that being able to get very good results at ISO 640 does not make 1.4 aperture so necessary. So for me Summilux versions are not that justified price / results wise. But now that my 28 is still not arriving I need something to cover the 15 - 50 gap. A friend just told me it would be more reasonable to get a CV 35 Ultron which has a nice price + the 28 Elmarit when it arrives, this way if any of the too stay in the bag, it will not be a financial non-sense. I've also been offered a Zeiss Biogon second hand for 600 Euros (18 month old, including the hood) and a Cron 35 (year 2003) uncoded for 1000 Euros. has any one an opinion about the price? Thanks, Eric
Shootist Posted April 19, 2007 Share #4 Posted April 19, 2007 Why not the 28 Cron. Yes it is more money but it is one stop faster.
egibaud Posted April 19, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted April 19, 2007 I was ready to pay for a Cron 28.... but none available either :-(
j. borger Posted April 19, 2007 Share #6 Posted April 19, 2007 I would not want the 28 elmarit asph if i were you because it is too contrasty for shooting pleasantly in sunny conditions... ... so i would get the 35 cron NOW .. and eventually add a LNIB 28 Elmarit pre-asph or ....CV 28 1.9 Ultron! jonoslack Posted April 19, 2007 Share #9 Posted April 19, 2007 Erm - you missed something. you could get a tri-elmar (you said you don't need the low light that much) if you can put up with f4 and not focusing that close, then it's a great lens
egibaud Posted April 19, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted April 19, 2007 I had the opportunity to get one for 1500 Euros :-( second hand and I thought about it for too long :-( The thing is F4 is quite high, when I mean not needing 1.4 means that 2.0 or 2.8 is ok. Also several post spoke about back/front focusing with TriElmar too. Aside the fact that this lens sounds very practical I could not make up my mind. jaapv Posted April 19, 2007 Share #11 Posted April 19, 2007 ???? sorry got lost, which one do you use most the 28 or the 35? Summicron 35 asph. It seems to have taken over from my 24. Probably the size as well. My only 28 is in my TE. I never was much of a 35 mm shooter on film either. on film I like the 28-50 combo. So on the M8 it turns out to be 21-35-75. The TE gets far less use than I expected.
lct Posted April 19, 2007 Share #12 Posted April 19, 2007 I would not want the 28 elmarit asph if i were you because it is too contrasty for shooting pleasantly in sunny conditions... The Elmarit 28/2.8 asph is a bit more contrasty that the 'cron but i would not say this personally. FWIW. egibaud Posted April 20, 2007 Author Share #13 Posted April 20, 2007 Hi, thanks for all your opinions and help. I ended up buying a Summicron 35 (year 2003) it is like new, this lens is so well rated everywhere that it looks like a MUST have. Price was 1000 Euros. I'll also get the Elmarit 28 when it arrives. The total price is just a bit higher than a new Cron 35. One question.... should I get the cron 35 coded? I did not check, but did Leica included free coding voucher with the M8 ? Thanks, Eric
