Risked life and limb to get this shot and the $7000 piece of crap let me down again

You might find this "complete bullshit" but I for one would much rather have a lens mount that has no issues for the vast majority of exposure values and that allows me to use legacy lenses from 1953 onwards without adapters rather than come up with something completely new.

Do I get the address from the web also any idea of the turn around time as I leave for Nigeria on the 8th and back home in a month so ideally a turn around time of one month would be perfect.......or is that asking too much?

Realistically I don't think you would have it back in one month. Expect 6 weeks.

Take the gear to your dealer and have them handle the shipment to Leica for you. That's the least they can do. I wouldn't pay for the shipping either. Leica should take care of shipping costs on warranty service / repairs.

Make sure that the shipment is insured. I've experienced dealers that even doesn't insure the shipments for the actual vale when they handle the shipping to Leica... It's a strange world.

But isn't that their worry? If you have a receipt showing that you handed your equipment into their care and the equipment goes missing en route to Solms isn't it their responsibility to replace it or reimburse the full value? Or am I being naïve?

Pete.

They shipped equipment directly to me without insurance. And when a parcel is signed for its signed for. I was surprised. Considering the value of the equipment one would think that the business and logistics around it would be done properly.

I'm not saying that everyone does it this way. But still. What if a shop looses a 20000 usd value shipment without insurance? Many of these small niche shops aren't exactly stockpiling money, and they might even have problems with such losses. It's definitely not the first time.

Anyway, insurance is very important. Most of the parcels go through scanning machines which shows the content to employees. Small packages with a big value without insurance of proper tracking is probably very lucrative.

By way of getting some comparative data, I googled "light leak canon", "light leak nikon" and "light leak SLR". Very "illuminating" :).

The recommended solution to the design flaw in many/most SLRs, of light leak through the eyepiece, is to cover up the eyepiece for long exposures - a bit like a scrunchie really.

Canon's factory solution to the light leak problem in the 5dmk3, from the LCD backlight onto the auto-exposure sensor, was a piece of black tape - well, at least you don't have to send the leica back to the factory to fit a scrunchie!

I didn't look to see how nikon solved the light leak problem with the 24-70 zoom. As that's "only" a £1000 lens, I guess we shouldn't expect any better ;).

Happy Christmas, and peace and love between all participants in this thread!

Not fantasy, different experience Steve. I can reproduce light leaking, but only at 16 stop overexposure. Not at 10. The frame is perfectly black at 10. And the leak does not look like the sample from Bali.

The sample looks like regular flare to me. Here is a quick shot at f/4, albeit different 50mm lens.

Good grief, you can't see the difference, even on your own examples?!

The warranty is world wide and your local dealer should handle the return and shipping for you anyway. Leica CS will tell you the same.

Something tells me that both lens and camera will return with the following in German:

"Product characteristic

Lens checked and adjusted

Rangefinder checked and adjusted"

Ie. apart from a holiday in Germany and a clean it will return with exactly the same "problem"...... Which is an 80 year old design fault ......

Perhaps super gluing the noctilux to your current m and buying another body would be a more painless solution.....

I had the same problem with Distagon 15mm ZM, never had it with other lenses though, I thought its a Zeiss problem (i don't have any other Zeiss lens). Leica have to give us extra discount despite all the problems we keep using their equipment :D

I've read this and find the title very misleading, IMO.

You are saying you're having a problem with the camera, with long exposures using a ND filter, with a know light leak you say you know about.

So as far as I know its just your bad choice in choosing leica... I'm not saying its good that there are light leaks, but you KNEW it, and FORGOT it and now BLAME Leica.

Sounds harsh if it hasn't been experienced before. This sort of thing has generally only come about with the 'ten stopper' that is now so popular for ultra long waterfall effects, something previously only possible with slow film and f/45. It is digital catching up with film, nothing to get excited about, just something to deal with as with any other photographic problem. No it shouldn't really happen, but neither should light leaks on your 4x5 film camera given the extended development period of the equipment, but they do.
