algrove Posted December 19, 2013 Share #22 Posted December 19, 2013 You need to try harder! Don't be too disappointed yet it will happen eventually! Trust me on thatI Come on K-H. How can we trust you on that when you turned one down? All this craziness from Leica is not acceptable, but all brands have their quirks, even the a7R. What we read here on LUF is not a very high percentage of owners in total and then those of us discussing problems are just a sub-set of that small number of M240 owners. I have certainly had my share of problems with lockups and do not find it acceptable, but at least all my images come out sharp with any Leica lens I have used-R or M,
Tonki-M Posted December 19, 2013 Share #23 Posted December 19, 2013 what is the symptom of the M locking up? Mine acts funny from time to time, acting on its own, sometimes it would zoom in, zoom out on its own for a few seconds then stop. sometimes it would just browse the menu by itself...again, stops when it gets bored i guess. will this lead to locking up? AlanG Posted December 19, 2013 Share #24 Posted December 19, 2013 The camera is in NJ. Carmen notified me that it will be repaired under warranty and will be done in January, 2014. The service dept will be closed for a week between Christmas and New Years. 3-6 weeks depending on what "January, 2014" means. When it comes to any reasonable level of service, Leica does have a screw loose.

Lou, please see above, I rest my case. Still having an M9 is all the Leica camera experience I need. My A7R is wonderful for my needs. I wish all of you the best of luck with your M240s. Bobitybob Posted December 19, 2013 Share #27 Posted December 19, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Having read this I'm glad that the worst that has happened to mine in the last two months is that the black paint on the lettering of the info button has all come off. Not ideal for a £5000 camera but luckily it functions perfectly so far

For example, DEET for mosquitos is often a cause of paint removal on any item.

You know at times I have had this issue, but then I found out I was pressing a button by accident when holding it and even after letting go it continued for some time. User error for me. From my experience, no it does not lead up to lockups as that occurs mostly when using the EVF for extended periods of time in warm weather, for me. The M240 doesn't seem to have endemic reports of lock-ups when used without the EVF. There are a lot of posts from folks that have never had a lock-up, including me. What we have had problems with is lock-ups with the EVF and it seems to be when the camera gets hot. I never had a problem with the EVF until, I shot on hot days with the EVF. I wish all of you the best of luck with your M240s. It looks like you'll need it IMHO. @K-H Yes, I have read many, many time that you were offered a Leica M and turned it down. I agree with Lou that the A7R would seem to meet your needs much more than the Leica M240. Hope to see more incredibly sharp images from all those lenses you own. I hope Sony sorts out the problems it is having with the corner sharpness, smearing, color cast in the corners, and vignetting on that sensor and wish you luck as well. It looks like you guys are going to need it.

From what I know now I believe to have already the right carefully chosen lenses that bypass most of these issues. I definitely will avoid corner smearing lenses to the same degree that smearing can be avoided with my M9. What little shading or discoloration is left in my M9 or A7R images is easily taken care of with the Universal Lens Calibrator technique from Capture One Complete. After converting RAW files to the DNG format this technique can easily and conveniently be used in LR5 as well. One can eliminate in this fashion not only shading or discoloration but also dust spots. That's not really needed for the A7R, as its dust removal function works so well. But it comes in handy for my M9 images. I hope you have as much fun with your choice of cameras as I do with mine and I always am looking forward to your excellent images. Isn't it wonderful to have so many choices for great photography gear? I certainly appreciate having choices. Thanks again for your feedback. It's always appreciated. algrove Posted December 19, 2013 Share #33 Posted December 19, 2013 K-H Has there finally been a resolution of the best adapter for use on the a7r and R lenses? I know you have the Novoflex, but some are having better luck on some lenses with the Metabones. Any further information on this point? Agree the dust remover is sorely missing on the M240. As such I am going to get an M240 for every lens I use (and that's a lot of lenses).

As such I am going to get an M240 for every lens I use (and that's a lot of lenses). Hi Lou, I have both a Novoflex and Metabones R to E adapter. Both measure around 28.90 mm. The precise distance should be 29.00 mm, i.e. 47 - 18 mm. The Novoflex adapter is pretty much spot on at 28.90 mm, give or take 0.01 mm. That's likely my measuring accuracy., I mean +-- 0.01 mm. The Metabones adapter has more variation in thickness from 28.89 to 29.04 mm. I prefer the Novoflex adapter with its ASTAT-NEX collar. What I have not done yet is to find out whether there are differences in focus accuracy or vibrations when mounted on a sturdy tripod. So your guess is as good as mine. efreed2754 Posted December 20, 2013 Share #35 Posted December 20, 2013 Have a hunch this problem caused by earlier rangefinder fix as you surmised. If true, all this doom and gloom can be blown away. Eh?

User error for me. From my experience, no it does not lead up to lockups as that occurs mostly when using the EVF for extended periods of time in warm weather, for me. no buttons were pressed in my case. One time, it occurred after i took a long exposure shot. At shot preview after the shot, it would start zooming in and out as if there was an invisible hand turning that dial... I do not own or use the EVF, so at least that's a saving grace for me i guess. Thanks for that good news!

kdriceman Posted December 27, 2013 Author Share #38 Posted December 27, 2013 This case is now closed. I shipped the camera to Leica NJ- they received it on December 12. Although I was told it would be repaired, calibrated, cleaned and returned in January, it was finished and shipped on December 23. I received it today. So, kudos and thanks to Leica NJ for a quick turnaround, they had it for about 10 days.

Thanks for that good news! My first (faulty/replaced) M did similar things a few times- and without the EVF. The menu would rapidly scroll with no buttons being pressed... to stop it I had to switch the camera off.
