Battery may need to be reconditioned. Can happen if it has been lying around for too long unused, or if it has not been discharged very often.

Try this: (1) leave the camera on the table in S mode until the "battery low" display disappears (= until the battery is almost completely discharged). This may take a long time (several hours), be patient.

(2) Then reload the battery in the charger until the charger says full. Put battery into the camera again.

(3) Switch camera "Auto power off" to off. Select "Info" display and leave the camera running until battery warning appears.

(4) Repeat with step 1. Do the whole procedure several times (4-5x).

I had a very similar experience with a non-original battery - even though that info told me that it was half full.

With a fully charged original battery, the camera performed correctly.

I did a full discharge if the non-original and then a full charge and it then all functioned correctly.

Here you are!

The battery is quite old...

I seriously doubt it is a real Leica battery. It has none of the familiar printing. The counterfeits have no 'smarts' that talk to the M9. I have one fake, and two genuine batteries. The fake will absolutely not charge properly, nor last more than a few minutes.

Try discharging the fake with a lightbulb.

There is an old thread somewhere around here whihc tells you which terminals to feed off - but you can easily find out by touching them with a wire.

Discharge it until the bulb goes out.

Then try charging it fully. You may get a pleasant surprise.

You also might get a fire.

Now this picture is confusing because the battery is like yours, but unlike any of mine.

And the statement is quoting Leica. The source, Leica Rumors is questionable.

Still, perhaps a European expert tell us whether such a product is even legal to sell in EU. It has none of the typical origins, specification, and warnings. It seems to me that Leica would not contract such.

It's the way Leica marked the batteries when the M8 was introduced.

LI-ion BATTERY

FÜR

LEICA M8

LEICA CAMERA

GMBH

And at this point such batteries are 7 years old and past their useful life.

Per Leica's own words regarding the firmware upgrade 1.196 (emphasis added):

• Improved power management.

The camera is now measuring battery stability internally. In case of weak battery stability, the camera switches off automatically.

Using old batteries could have lead to camera crashes and banding stripes under certain conditions with the previous firmware versions. Especially the usage of nearly 6 years old M8 batteries proved to be critical.

It is the nature of Li-ion batteries that the capacity weakens after a certain time. We recommend replacing the batteries for the M8 and the M9 after 3 years at the latest. Heavy usage can even accelerate the aging process, and then batteries should be replaced earlier. In (the) case that the total amount of pictures, that can be taken with a certain battery, is significantly lower than before, with Firmware 1.196, we recommend replacing this battery."
