CS2 CS3 Question

This is actually a Canon 5D question since I know many of you on this forum also shoot with the 5D. Before I ask my question I first want to express my gratitude to LEICA for making the M8 a camera that can interface with Photoshop CS in RAW, which is what I use, hassle free!!!! LEICA is spot on on this one! Canon on the other hand blew it. I can't open my 5D RAW files using PSCS directly from a flash card, and the Canon software that used to do it (Digital Photo Pro) decided to stop working, even after I uninstalled and re-installed Digital Photo Pro. I've been resisiting upgrading to CS2 or CS3 because I've been doing fine without it, but I understand it can hande the 5D DNG's hassle fee, no plugin required. Is this the case???

At times like this I love the M8 even more. It is already my favorite camera!!!!

Thanks,

Wilfredo

Wilfredo, my 5D files (both CR2 and jpg) open just fine into CS2 -- and when I tried the beta of CS3 they opened there as well. I think if you look at the Adobe site for cameras supported by CS2 you will find Canon 5D in there, so there's obviously something strange going on in your system.

Allan,

Thanks for letting me know the new CS version works.

David,

What may I ask is the ACR? Please pardon my ignorance. I too suspect there is something going on with my system. This all happened after I allowed my computer to remove unused files to free up some space.

Wilfredo,

CS2 and CS3 open my 5D and M8 Raw files just fine.

With your preference for BW, you will want CS3. The ACR BW conversion is improved, and PS CS3 has a new and more flexible BW adjustment layer.

I tried Lightroom for a few months and like it very much, but the integration of Bridge, ACR, and PS has made me stay with CS3.

You might try installing the 30 day trial of CS3. At least then you'll know for sure, although I think your CS2 install must have gotten "wonky" somehow.

Hmmm....maybe it's not available yet. Does anyone know? If you can get ahold of a copy, it offers you a trial when you install it...

They pulled the beta version of CS3 from their web site, because they are getting ready to release the real thing, and the beta is going to expire soon.

However, you should be able to use CS2 fine, but if you have an old version of ACR that did not know about the 5D, you will simply need to upgrade it (which is a free download from Adobe).

Failing that - you can also try the 30 day trial of Lightroom too....

I need to clarify that I don't have CS2, I have Photoshop CS, that's what I stated at the start of the thread. Until the Canon Software malfunctioned, I had no probelm tansferring the RAW file to PSCS using it. It looks like I'll have to spring for the latest version of PS.

Wilfredo, I don't know if this is what you mean, but the 5D does not support the USB Mass Storage standard, and cannot be used like an external harddrive. Their software may have installed a driver which got around this, but in general you need to use either a card reader or copy the files to the computer first.

If you're not using Photoshop's more advanced features (like layers, masking, etc.), I would recommend you buy Lightroom instead. CS3 is waaaaaay expensive, unless you can get educational pricing!

According to Adobe's web, CS3 is available for download as a full package or as an upgrade from CS, CS2, etc. Go to Adobe - Photoshop CS3, Photo Editing Software, Digital Image Editor.

Wilfredo if you buy the CS3 upgrade from the Adobe online store you can use this code, AIGA07, to get it at 169.xx plus shipping and tax.

I used it yesterday.

The upgrade for CS3 from PS 7, CS or CS2 is $199 and if you use this code, AIGA07, at the Adobe online store you get it for $169.xx plus tax and shipping.

I don't see that as WAY EXPENSIVE.

It's funny what some people think is way expensive when all of us have spent 10x to 15x more then what Adobe is charging for the upgrade to PS CS3 for ONE Leica lens. And we usually buy more then 1 lens.

I was referring to the price for CS3 retail, which is about $1300. I actually wasn't aware you can upgrade from CS directly to CS3. At under $200, it's a bargain even compared to Lightroom!
