zeitraffer Posted November 9, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 9, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Isn´t it (technically) possible to develop a interchangeable sensor for the Leica M? Don´t want to buy a new one every five years or so.
Advertisement Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Hi zeitraffer, Take a look here interchangeable sensor. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted November 9, 2013 Share #2 Posted November 9, 2013 Yes, but the cost would be more than what you'd get for your s/h M and the extra you'd have to pay for a new camera with full warranty and new shutter, so you'd end up buying the new M anyway. 250swb Posted November 9, 2013 Share #3 Posted November 9, 2013 I'm sure it is technically possible, but the camera is more than the individual parts. A sensor from the year 2020 put into a 2013 M240 body would become a Frankenstein horror akin to transplanting the brain of a Nobel Prize winner into the body of a slug. How could anybody even think it would be a good idea, its perverted! Steve
jaapv Posted November 9, 2013 Share #4 Posted November 9, 2013 It assumes a newer sensor would give you better photographs. Which not. It will give you better pixel-peeping and bragging rights. There are quite a few arguments to replace a DMR by a newer camera but the quality of the image is not amongst them, for example.
masjah Posted November 9, 2013 Share #5 Posted November 9, 2013 ...and you'd almost certaily have to upgrade the associated electronics if the new sensor had a greater number of pixels. Then it really is not cost effective. As has already been implied, it would be like having a new different DMR on an R8/9 camera.
andybarton Posted November 9, 2013 Share #6 Posted November 9, 2013 Perhaps you should ask why you think it necessary to buy a new camera every 5 years

3D-Kraft.com Posted November 11, 2013 Share #8 Posted November 11, 2013 I think the only constant is the mechanic/optical rangefinder module and perhaps the strap lugs (when quality assurance improved). The rest will undergo sgnificant changes (display, processor, software, sensor, connectors etc.) and also the body has been changed from model to model. So we should better discuss about an option to move the rangefinder module from body to body (plus recalibration) - or the option to buy an "M" without M(esssucher) at all and save money, space and weight for those that can pass on it anyway. JeTexas Posted November 11, 2013 Share #9 Posted November 11, 2013 If the camera had a removeable back, similar to many medium format cameras or the R with a DMR, it's possible. It would need to be a module of all electronics, not just the sensor.
