pf127167 Posted November 8, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 8, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I apologize in advance as I am sure this has been asked and answered before but my searches are coming up blank. I bought my first Leica (MM) a couple months ago and notice tgere is no aperture information being recorded in the exif data. My lenses are all 6 bit coded. Is this just the nature of the beast or am I missing something? Thanks in advance, Jeff
Advertisement Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 Hi pf127167, Take a look here No aperture shown in MM exif data?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Chuck Albertson Posted November 8, 2013 Share #2 Posted November 8, 2013 6-bit coding only tells the camera what lens is clamped on to it. M lenses don't have any means to transmit aperture data to the camera.
250swb Posted November 8, 2013 Share #3 Posted November 8, 2013 To be clear do you mean the data shown by the camera, or the EXIF data shown in Lightroom or Photoshop? The camera doesn't show the aperture when reviewing the image, but the camera's guess (sometimes wild) of the aperture used should be shown in the EXIF data in Photoshop or Bridge. wattsy Posted November 8, 2013 Share #4 Posted November 8, 2013 I seem to recall that CS6 Bridge (and presumably CS6 versions of PS and ACR) didn't show the camera approximated aperture value with MM files but the latest CC version most certainly does. 250swb Posted November 8, 2013 Share #5 Posted November 8, 2013 CS6 and Bridge definitely do show aperture with MM files. Steve
sblutter Posted November 8, 2013 Share #6 Posted November 8, 2013 How can it possibly be accurate?

wattsy Posted November 8, 2013 Share #8 Posted November 8, 2013 CS6 and Bridge definitely do show aperture with MM files. Steve Yes, I think some part of the underlying CS6 software (ACR?) was updated at some point this year which fixed the aperture value not appearing. It definitely didn't show in CS6 Bridge or ACR when I bought my camera last year (I'm still running the same 0.017 firmware so it can't be anything to do with the camera). It apparently didn't show in Lightroom either but I don't use that software so wouldn't know either way.
jip Posted November 8, 2013 Share #9 Posted November 8, 2013 How can it possibly be accurate? It uses the small round eye top left of the camera to compare the light there with TTL, and then 'guess' the aperture...
wattsy Posted November 8, 2013 Share #10 Posted November 8, 2013 How can it possibly be accurate? Well it can be accurate because it often is (the value in my screenshot above is pretty close to the F1.4 I was most probably using) but it obviously cannot be a reliable estimate because the blue dot can only take a crude exposure reading which takes no account of the reflectivity of the subject or the distribution of light within a scene. jip Posted November 9, 2013 Share #11 Posted November 9, 2013 I usually like 99% of the time see that when I shot a picture at f2 it will say f2.4 in Lightroom, that is with Summicron 50 and 35 (latest models) haven't really tested it but this seams what's happening. Exactly, no aperture data. Looks like it just isn't available.
250swb Posted November 9, 2013 Share #14 Posted November 9, 2013 So you need to use Bridge which does show it. Steve
oliton Posted November 9, 2013 Share #15 Posted November 9, 2013 Like jip said, it is an information guessed by the camera comparing the timed exposure value to the reading done through the little round window on the front of the camera (which mesures ambiant light). If you use ND filters, you will get wild apertures like f/32 or f54 in any software.
jaapv Posted November 9, 2013 Share #16 Posted November 9, 2013 Exactly, no aperture data. Looks like it just isn't available. Sure it is. It is an incomplete readout by the processing software.
wattsy Posted November 9, 2013 Share #17 Posted November 9, 2013 Exactly, no aperture data. Looks like it just isn't available. What do you mean "exactly" – did you actually read what I wrote? The aperture data is there because Bridge (and ACR) displays it. If you are using CS6 or LR4 you might need to update (not necessarily upgrade) the software. jip Posted November 9, 2013 Share #18 Posted November 9, 2013 Here Lightroom 5 shows it all, works out of the box. Aperture 3 never did show it, and I've never checked photoshop since I don't use that allot...
