Live view and EVF fail with adaptor

Live view and EVF work perfectly on my M with 35/2.8 Summaron LTM (uncoded). Lens setting done manually via menu. The Voigtlander 35/135 adapter doesn't have the cutout shown above, but is the current version sold by Robert White. Incidentally, they suggest the 50/75 type adapter was discontinued in September. It only takes a few seconds to set lens identification via the menu if your M has problems as described here.

Setting the lens identification via the menu will not solve the problem with LV and EVF not working if the adapter has the cutout. The 6-bit reader is still used to detect the presence of a lens even when the lens data is manually entered

This I can confirm...(also if Lens Detection is set to Off).

Bit off topic (please forgive me) but I am looking forward to getting outside and seeing how my battered old 1950 Elmar performs on the M. Not wishing to stir the CCD sensor fans (and I do count my self as one - I love the images I got from my sadly departed M8.2) but it will be interesting to see how the old lenses perform on the M's CMOS sensor. After all these lenses still provided the so called "Leica look" before digital emerged.

Maybe time to start an old lenses on the M thread - after all with adapters and the EVF (apologies, I said it.....) the field has been opened up somewhat!

  • 1 month later...

I experienced this behavior (lens detection off) :

Visoflex III : "lens unrecognized" - Liveview doesn't work

Visoflex II : Liveview does work

Leitz LTM adapter with cutout : Liveview doesn't work (not starnge, fro what I have read here)

COMA's M adapter for Contarex lenses : Liveview doesn't work (and looking at how it is made, it looks that the end piece is a M adapter with cutout)

You can usually find on eBay some Leica screw mount to M adapters which not only have no cutouts (for the old-school focus lever infinity lock), but in fact have the 6-bit coding slots milled in them. IIRC they come in a couple of quality/price levels.
