Delcredere Posted October 28, 2013 Share #1 Posted October 28, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) My Leica 240 bought this July from Leica Mayfair London lost its right hand lug last week whilst I was clambering over rocks on a hike in the Namib desert. Two days later the left one dropped out. The whole lugs are came off - leaving a flush black circle with two tiny holes matching the flush surface of the detached lugs. it looks like Leica's claim that this problem is solved for deliveries after 5 April is incorrect. It could be that the "new" lugs are not strong enough to take the weight of the longer R lenses. I had the R28-90 Vario Elmarit mounted.
Advertisement Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Hi Delcredere, Take a look here Strap lugs still an issue. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted October 28, 2013 Share #2 Posted October 28, 2013 Can you hear screws rattling around inside? It's difficult to believe two such small screws can be strong enough under load and, assuming the lugs did not appear to work loose, suggests the wrong size screws have been used. The Vario-Elmarit is not that heavy a lens...

algrove Posted October 28, 2013 Share #6 Posted October 28, 2013 Must say does not sound good as I also use that same lens a lot, but never carry by lug nuts. When tramping around I often use my Think Tank Speed Freak Ver. 2.0 waist pack. It can be shoulder mounted too. This bag happens to be deep enough to hold the M240 camera with 28-90 lens attached on one side of the bag while allowing one to close the top with zipper if wanted when climbing and/or in difficult and risky places or at least close the flap when just walking on level ground. Just remembered-I am not affiliated with Think Tank, but just happen to like and use their products.
Overgaard Posted October 28, 2013 Share #7 Posted October 28, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) What Leica said when they discovered the error (believed to be prior to April 5, 2013 deliveries) was that they would take responsibility for any camera and lens damaged due to this. So that should take the worst drama out of it. Theoretically this could happen to any camera, so at least for the M240 Leica Camera AG has actually stated officially, that if that should happen - they will pay for repair/new kit. Delcredere Posted October 28, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted October 28, 2013 how's your cam? any damage ? Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2 Camera is OK but I am not sure about the lens which took a ding - although I did manage to catch it before its descent was complete. Delcredere Posted October 28, 2013 Author Share #10 Posted October 28, 2013 What have Leica Mayfair said about this? I am still in Namibia but will see then immediately on my return. My past experience with them has been excellent so I am expecting a helpful attitude.
suneohair Posted October 28, 2013 Share #11 Posted October 28, 2013 Is it not possible that it was from the pre April 4th bunch? Which was then sold at a later date?

dugby Posted October 29, 2013 Share #13 Posted October 29, 2013 Does one get any warning symptoms prior to separation ? eg does the lug become loose before the BIG BANG ?

However in 25 years of using cameras- it has never happened to a single one I have owned, and I have owned oh so many. Theoretically the lug connection points are one place a designer would want to make sure is very strong- significantly over-engineered in fact, and simply cannot come undone by themselves. Realistically: having failed this- they would have to ensure that they covered any ensuing damage which would essentially be their fault. Anything less would be outrageous: and especially so from a manufacturer that commands a hefty premium and prides itself on unparalleled excellence. dugby Posted October 29, 2013 Share #18 Posted October 29, 2013 No warning signs. Doh !!! Looks like I will have to put the 1kg fishing line from the straps, down across the base plate of my new M240 To be sure to be sure.... until Delcredere's M240 is determined to be pre or post "April 4th" Sorry that yours... has had a crash. matlep Posted October 29, 2013 Share #19 Posted October 29, 2013 To be sure to be sure.... until Delcredere's M240 is determined to be pre or post "April 4th" I find it hard to believe that a camera sold by Mayfair in july would have been in the first produced batch. Like it would have been sitting on a shelf for months without nobody buying it. Very unlikely....
Overgaard Posted October 29, 2013 Share #20 Posted October 29, 2013 Well, checking the serial no with Leica Customer Service cs@leica-camera.com would verify very easily if the camera was from the before April batch, or a later with the same error. I guess you will know later, after having talked with them or Mayfair.
