Andy, I fear Marilyn and I will have to give this one a miss this year. (We've well and truly blown our holiday budget elsewhere already.)

So have a great time everyone; we look forward to seeing the pictures, and we'll try again in 2015.

Guest odeon

I can't tell about numbers for dinner, but the meeting will be the most attractive challenge of all time. There will be some surprises in Istanbul. No more word for now. We should wait.

Heads up folks

You may not know (I didn't) that UK (and probably other EU) citizens require a visa to enter Turkey.

We generally take it for granted that we can travel to places in Europe without one, but that is NOT the case for Turkey (which is mostly in Asia, to be fair)

UK Foreign Office guidance is here:

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/turkey/entry-requirements

and the official Turkish government website to apply for one is here:

https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/

They cost $20 (I assume that's US $, but haven't applied for one myself yet) Edit: Yes it is.

They can be purchased up to 90 days in advance of the entry date (in our case that will be next week)

Be careful if you do a Google for the visa requirements, as there are plenty of charlatan agencies who will fill in a form for you for another huge fee.

(I only found this out by listening to Moneybox Live on Radio 4 in the car just now - worth the licence fee on its own...)

Yes I had just discovered it this morning on my way to work from my newly acquired guide book; I was going to check so thanks for confirming and providing the links, Andy.

Pete.

You used to be able to buy the visa on arrival - the last time I went around 10 years ago it was £10. I don't know if you can still buy them on arrival, but given the numbers of people who holiday there I'd think it likely.

I think that you can still do that, but there will inevitably be a queue.

We are arriving from somewhere other than the UK, so I will buy ours next week to make sure we are covered.

From Germany you need only a passport or an identity card (Personalausweis) if you are not longer than 90 days in a time range of 180 days in Turkey.
