First Lock up

It's not exactly a lockup but I've experienced a number of occasions where pressing the shutter button would not fire the shutter, but instead the shutter speed LED would show up as "---". This was when using aperture priority and no EVF. None of the other buttons (menu, info) would work so the only way out was to do a power cycle.

I updated mine even though it wasn't supposed to need it.

Sorry to not be clear, but I am asking for comments on cameras that were delivered new from Leica with the new FW xxx.12 already installed in them from the factory, not new xxx.12 FW updated by owners.

I got one of those for 2 weeks now and it "freezes". It came with the latest FW. I didn't use EVF.

Just new to this Forum today... Hope to try and find a possible solution to my locked M240.

Have only had the camera for a month and had one previous freeze, but taking the battery out then back in again fixed the problem.

Today, after taking a short series of 10 single shots the camera locked. Taking the battery out and putting it back again (several times) was not successful. The M240 has the latest FW and I was not using LV or an EVF... Later, I replaced the battery with another that was fully charged, but still no success!!!! Also re-formatted the SD card (SanDisk 32GB Extreme Pro 95MB/s) using SDFormatter... still nothing!!! Red light flickers for a few seconds when switched on but nothing else works and shutter release is locked down... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... Looks like a trip to the Leica dealer here in Taipei (where I work)...

This is a bit annoying as only got back my 1-year old M9P a week ago after 5 months with Schmidt Marketing in Hong Kong for sensor replacement...

I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions...

Many thanks... Graeme

Just wanted to report 2 lockups yesterday:

- No EVF mounted.

- Battery level > 70%.

- 32 GB Samsung SD HC 10, 60% full, all compressed DNG.

- Red write light stuck on. Image not saved.

- Had to remove battery to power cycle the camera.

- Temperature of first one, indoor: 68F ~= 20C

- Temperature of second one, outdoor: 37F ~= 3C

Therefore, this kind of lockup is not temperature related, and smells more like firmware bug than hw issue.

The possibility of lockups being related to the number of files in the SD should be investigated.

Hope Leica will soon release a new beta firmware that finally reaches decency levels.

Same thing happened to me, except the card was a Lexar. I would actually link it to the low temperature in my case - it never happened before and I got the lock up immediately after the camera cooled down to near freezing temp for the first time.

Sorry to hear of this issue. Are you saying you cannot even access the main menu?

If you can get the main menu, try factory reset.

Some have reported strange situations with the batteries for the first few charges. Mine always starts up again as normal after the battery out/in or battery change.

Did you try another SD card?

Is there a chance you last hit "Play" button or "LV" button? If so, maybe try hitting those buttons after red flashing stops.

Did you delete images from the SD card while in camera?

Is the bottom plate securely in place?

Try recharging each battery again and then insert into camera.

Sorry for all my questions, but just trying to get it started again for you.

Many, many thanks for your reply... just pleased someone could respond with suggestions...

Yes... everything is dead apart from the red light blinking for a few seconds when the switch is on/off. I cannot access the menu at all, and the shutter button seems to be "stuck" down and has very little movement. Yes... I did try the Play and LV button when the red light stopped blinking. I also have two batteries and recharged both and tried them a number of times without any luck.

I took the camera to the Leica dealer here in Taipei city last night, who have been helpful in the past and also where I purchased my M9P two years ago. They tried with their batteries and also inserted another SD card... no luck again!!! They said they had not seen this problem before with the M240. Anyway, they are sending the camera to Schmidt Marketing here in Taipei on Monday, so hopefully I'll have some response by early/mid week.

The camera had been working fine over the past month, with a lot of use in different situations in Hong Kong, Germany and Holland during my recent travels. It was fantastic to use apart from just one lock-up that was easily fixed by the battery in/out.

When this happened last Wednesday it was a cold/wet day (for Taiwan), and I was taking some random shots inside a large dance studio. It is quite possible I may have inadvertently hit another button in haste to ready the camera, as my hands were cold. I had taken about 10 shots but not in any rapid succession, and I noticed a problem with the feel of the shutter. It was depressed and had very little movement and could not take the shot. I also knew immediately it had frozen as there were no electronics, so took the battery out & then put back in again... but no change! Tried once or twice again then left it for a while before more attempts, and then later using my 2nd battery and recharging both... but still no change!

For the type of shots I was doing that day with the M240 I like to use the RF for focusing. I like to find the right moment with one shot at a time when shooting (contemporary) dance, as it challenges my instinct and response to timing and movement as well as honing my RF focusing skills. I generally use the Canon 5DMk3 when doing most pro jobs, but I also carry the Leica with me at all times... as I love using it in many situations during dance rehearsals. My job is training professional dancers, and photography has been a life-long passion and I am often commissioned to shoot pro theatre & dance productions. The M9P and now the M240 are among the best cameras I've had and really enjoyable to use, so hope the problem can soon be resolved & I can get it back to start using it again...

  • 9 months later...

Up to now (I own the camera for 19 months, and use if almost on a daily basis) I only had few (3,4,5 not sure) lock ups.

The thing was it never happened in a crucial moment up to yesterday. I almost lost the shot, luckily this happened on the third shot of the same scene.

Has anyone any updates from Leica whether this can be fixed at all?

Did they come up with a statement what causes this to happen? I had neither EVF nor LV engaged.
