I want to buy second hand M9 in mint condition body, but after I tried to shoot I found the sensor can't produce good picture. There are so many spots on the sensor, such as the image below.

My question, is this just a dirty sensor? or a fault sensor? or just oily sensor?

The next question is, wether the sensor can be cleaned? or should be replaced with a new sensor? how much cost of new sensor replacement?

Thanks

NOTE: the sample shoot at f/16 summicron 35 asph, toward macbook pro back cover

It looks really bad but it is a known problem and, judging from some reports here, Leica will replace the sensor, even when out of warranty. If the M9 is being offered at a bargain price (say sub-£2k), it may well be worth buying but do check with Solms first (send them the image file) as to what their policy is regarding out of warranty sensor replacement.

Hi,

Whatever the problem may be, let the seller fix it first.

I had a similar, but much, much less severe case -- with a few spots only --and Leica NJ replaced the sensor and made other change at no cost to me.

Maybe they will lower the price equal to the cost of a new sensor and shipping. The camera is not usable at all now.

A brand new sensor would be very nice! You could also ask Leica to check the rest of the camera at the same time too. (Focus and so on)

Negotiate!

I have a similar issue and just sent mine back to the Leica dealer who told me it is a sensor issue. I am waiting to hear if there is any cost for replacement. The M9 is quite new but not sure if it is still under warranty or just out of it.

What causes this?

Just a guess. Cover glass is delaminating from the sensor . Possible manufacturing defect or someone used way to much cleaning solution and it seeped around the cover glass. Maybe the edge sealant was missed in sensor manufacturing,

Mind this is just a guess.
