The WATE is an excellent lens for landscape photography as well as for photos inside of buildings. I use it mostly @ 21 and @16 and if possible with f=4,0 only.

Some examples, #1 @16 (M9), #2 @21 (MM) and #3 @16 (MM)

Its a great lens in terms of being compact, good resolution and other IQ parameters , but has two small drawbacks: The f/4 as largest aperture making it less suitable for night photography together with M because of the restriction in exposure time of M. And secondly some small distortion. The latter can be corrected in SW, but I have not found any tools with built-in profile to correct this. I know that one can download free the Adobe tool to generate your own profile, but I have been to lazy to do this since it involves some work. This should also indicate that the distortion is not to serious.

Thank you for this pointing to this tool. But according to their site no Leica lenses are supported? If you need to make create your own profile you might as well use Lightroom?

The WATE is in fact supported and profiled and I have used it many times to resolve moustache distortion issues

in my experience I have been unable to correct moustache distortion in Lightroom

Perhaps this has already been answered in earlier threads.

I love my wide angle Leica lenses (down to 18mm) but occasionally need even wider, usually for interiors and occasionally for landscapes with interesting foregrounds.

The most natural choice seems to be the (relatively) inexpensive Voigtlander 12mm f5.6 Ultra Wide Heliar, which seems to have good central performance but poor edges, high vignetting, etc.

(I don't know about the 15mm Zeisses.)

The alternative would be the 5 times as expensive WATE, which would effectively provide me with only 16mm capability but greater uniformity of performance.

The scales seem tipped strongly towards the Voigtlander. Am I missing anything?

On Ebay or in some store?

Getdpi buy sell forums. I sold one without the frankenfinder for less than that but it had decent wear. I had sold it back when I had an M9 and did not like using external optical finders but with the EVF it is a pleasure to use.

If someone had both and would be willing to make a comparison shoots at 21mm I'd be greatly thankful.

Seeing those two photos one next to the other, center and corner crops of the same scene, would be the best way to make a decision.

Even though there are plenty who would oblige your request, I would be reticent to spend $6k on others photos. Why not just rent one or both for a week and make up your mind on your own time with many different subjects?

The WATE is an amazing lens, indeed. as another has stated, I too use it at 16 or 21mm and at f/4 with wonderful results.

a little story...

I was recently at a trade show where the association I work with got us a private introduction to Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple. I had my WATE on my M9, on a table when he walked into the room and it was the first thing he noticed, as he is an avid Leica user. "What lens is that?" he said, and I started showing him. I think he may have already bought one ;)

Here's a few images from the Hilton Quebec and Chicago's Hilton Palmer House, all with the WATE on an M9, 16mm @ f/4:
