for R lenses i have : 35 mm, 50mm, 90mm,135mm, 35-70 Macro and

for M lenses: 28mm,35mm,50mm,90mm (Apocron and macroElmar) and 135 apoTelyt

Thanks Karl :)

Best

Henry

Hi, my R lenses set in at 135mm, and they should all be fine. Presently, I am trying out the Telyt R 6,8/400 and I am satisfied.

M lenses are a very different story. I bought the a7 because it seems to be better than the a7r based on the shoddy pictures of Mister Huff and other early birds ...

I am presently going through my 21 M lenses and publish my quick-and-dirty findings here

Messsucher Objektive (Leica M, M39, Contax G & Co.) an Sony KB E-Mount - Seite 80 - Systemkamera Forum

starting at page 80 (under my nick immodoc)

Look for the pictures, I am a humble hobby photographer, not a theorist (there).

I have only one 28, the 2,8/28 Elmarit ASPH. It survived the 1st round, and may accompany me on an outing.

After this, I shall know whether I use with the a7 in future, or with the M9, or SONY NEX-6 (which is the perfect allrounder for Leica M glass).

My most promising 35s appear to be the Leica Summarit and the Summicron V4; the ZEISS Biogon 2/35 and the Voigtländer Nokton 1,2/35 V1 not so much.

No problems with my 3 50s, and beyond. ---

A SONY I buy despite of the styling. The handling one gets used to, but I am ergonomically hardened, having worked with IBM 3270 green screens ...

With the SONY a7/r the most difficult question is the Limbo question asked by Chubby Checker - how low can you go?

At present, my Leica Elmarit 2,8/21 ASPH looks promising, but I am not entirely sure.

I see that some of the adapters for the A7/A7r transfer the electronic functions between non-native lenses and the camera. For example for canon EOS lenses. As far as I know this is not possible for Leica R lenses at the moment. Can anyone shed a light if this would also be possible for Leica R (ROM?) lenses in the future. Would be realy nice to have the automatic diafragm function and EXIF readout.

I should clear up that when I said that the R-lenses are "unbelievable" on this camera I mean the Tele lenses. I own nothing under 100mm in R-lenses. I can't comment on those R-lenses.

Also, please don't ask me to indorse this camera and pick lenses for you. This camera has some problems that need to be addressed. Like why the focus is so hit and miss? Is there a shutter problem? Why is there so much CA centrally? I am trying to side step these issues and other problems like shadow color noise that from experience often can't be judged at this point in the RAW developers. And, guys like K-H will figure out if the there really exist focus or camera shake problems or if, it is something else. I'm not the long lens technique expert at this rarefied level, for sure.

Next, 50mm in my view, for me, is unworkable on the A7R with my Summilux. The extra MPs and technological stuff on this camera does not overcome the image quality compared to the M240 (with M lenses). You need to get up over 50mm before this camera becomes interesting for M lenses... so, you can imagine that doesn't leave many lenses to recommend a kit.

I'll post a 280/4 APO picture next. If, money was no object I would have kept the A7R and just glued it to this lens. I do regret sending the A7R back from that standpoint. But, I feel fortunate to have the M and I know something else is around the corner for this lens.

Thanks - of course I am not asking anyone to pick lenses for me (that would be silly) , or even endorse the camera - I already own it. I mistakenly thought you may have some experience with wider R lenses. I have seen what appear to be good results from slower M 50s, like the Elmar-M I have. I need to try it out today and see if it looks good enough to keep and then hone in on R lenses I can try.

Here is the M240 + Leica R 280/4 APO. The second is just n enlarged section of the M240 shot. The M240 is also is just amazing.

The difference between these cameras is that when you zoom in, the A7R has the expected extra clarity. Not a lot, kind of like the difference between the M9 and the M240 shots I compared. Also, the A7R has much more purple fringe. I think that the spill over on pixels is greater or the RAW or in camera processing isn't at that point yet. I just downloaded the new LR beta (new for today) that includes something new for the A7, so maybe we will see more LR updates.

Comparison of the Leica Noctilux 50mm f/0.95 ASPH to the SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 50mm T0.95: Sony A7R - full frame T0.95 with the SLR Magic HyperPrime (and special guest, Leica Noctilux 50mm F0.95) » EOSHD.com

The Author claims the Hyperprime is much sharper than the Noctilux and provides a single comparison picture. The Noctilux is back focussed on the black leather background rather than the camera.

I didn't even bother to read the rest.

I guess it is interesting to know that there exists a "hyperprime" that has surveyed this long in one piece, must have used "hyperloctite"!

My apologies for coming across this way. I was only trying to state I don't have any normal focal length R-lens so, I couldn't recommend one and that for the M lenses, as a whole, I can't endorse the camera. Sorry it came across the way it did.

Wow. Interesting how narrow the DOF is and you nailed it. It was a real challange for me to get a picture like that. What shutter speed?

Hi, shutter speed was 1/50. Taking pictures like that takes some doing ...

My keep/discard ratio is around 1/20 ...

I wanted to show what a SONY a7 can also do.

With my Leica M9 I could not take a picture like that.

I do not know where my R-to-M adapter is ... and do not care ...

Thanks Mike. Which aperture did you use?

Quote: "When Sony introduced this camera I was lead to believe by them that the off-set micro-lenses in the corner of the sensor allowed RF lenses to work on this camera."

Our West Coast Sony rep still thinks this is so, though he certainly wasn't knowledgeable about the camera. But here and on RFF, folks seem to be recommending A7 more highly for M lenses.

For the time being, all I want is a sensor with higher ISOs for mid-range M-mount lenses, when my M9 would have trouble coping with available light. I'm going to try A7r because I don't use very wide lenses. Folks here and elsewhere have shown me that 40 Cron and 50 Sonnar-C are rather nice on it. Maybe even 50 pre-asph Lux. And I assume Sony/Zeiss will soon offer a 28 that works optimally with A7r's microlenses.

I passed over the M240 because I didn't like its color very much, and now that there's a firmware upgrade and waiting lists are shorter, I've unfortunately come to the conclusion that it's obsolescent. I plan to use the A7r in limited situations for a couple of years (or whatever time it takes), and the go back to Leica full time with M360 or whatever happens later.

..... Bit late on a reply .......

I think if you are after better high ISO performance you may be disappointed.......

Hand holding this camera without shake needs 1/2xfocal length ...... As against 1/halfxfocal length with a Leica M in my hands......

I find myself using much higher ISO than on the M which would completely negate (and more) the gain over M9 ISO performance allegedly offered by the sony.

To my eye the the actual noise is more noticeable than the M and takes more getting rid of in LR.

If are intending to jump from M9 to A7r for this reason alone you may have problems.......
