The problem isn't vignetting or colour shift, that is simple, it is the smearing that can't be corrected in post processing.

But lets not be defeatist, all said and done the A7R body and three Zeiss E mount prime lenses (when available) can be had for less than £4000, £1000 cheaper than an M240 body. In reality it would only be the widest E mount lens that would be needed anyway, but AF and perfect correction may become addictive.

oh god ...... yet more bl**dy lenses ....... I was trying to avoid that ....:p

the biggest problem is the 17mm TS-E, with Metabones smart adapter you have severe vignetting and it is unusable

I stacked two adapters, the E- LM and LM - EOS and you get the full images but stacking two cheep adapters is not usable either!

Does anybody know of an adapter for Canon EOS?

Are you using the Metabones III... third generation adapter that was made for use on the full frame Nex video camera and should work the same on the A7?

no, is must be the II

I just found it on the 24mm TS-E here:

Really? The camera flange looks like chrome plated material in the promo pics. What are you referring to?

Someone on another site mentioned with camera in hand that the flanges were plastic. That's all. We need one in hand to make our own assessments.

Have you gotten around to using any R lenses yet on your a7r?

then sell all the Leicas, buy the Sony/Zeiss system and either pay off the house or have a very long holiday with the money left over ;)

Don't give people ideas :) !

Luckily we're past the age of hasty decisions + week-ends without the red dot, at least for an hour or so... :(

Otherwise it might even derail into: sell the L-gear AND the house! A phone with a built-in cam will do - become a lotus-eater or start being an other HCB-copy attempt, who did it all with a normal lens. Good grief!

Plastic lens mount??

Now, that can only be true,

or not?

and I tried the Zeiss Hologon, you can mount it but the shutter seems to be so far in front of the sensor, that the lens is blocking the shutter. I got "camera error" and had to take out the battery!! (uff, my nerves) Images of the mounted Hologon and close up of the shutter are in my flickr album (link below)

you find the images (also from the EOS adapters) here:

You need the Metabones Smart adapter III for the Canon lenses. I am not sure which one you used. Your results with the Canon 17mm TS-E lens does not appear to agree with what has been reported on FM; I am not sure if the Metabones Smart adapter III was used, but I suspect so:

Sony will NEVER do this so it will have to be a PP fix .... and a different correction for every lens below 50mm.

Yes I don't see Sony being interested in automatically identifying and correcting other brands of lenses for Jpegs. Although considering the camera can use apps there is no reason this couldn't be done if the EXIF information is available in the file, or if you want to select lenses manually. But if you shoot raw the info only needs to be passed to a raw processor that supports using this information for correction.

I use DXO as my principal raw converter. DXO lets you save "Presets" that can be any or many adjustments that you made to a sample image. Even with lenses that don't have an "auto correction module" it is pretty easy to apply a correction to a batch of images that were shot with a particular lens. In the case of one of my lenses, I find it needs a specific C/A correction. So I made a preset for that and use it on all of the images I shoot with that lens.

I think it would be pretty quick to group a bunch of images and apply a batch correction via a preset before moving on to individually adjusting each image for color, contrast, noise, etc.

When you dig deep into the corrections that DXO uses on lens "flaws," you'll see that besides identifying each lens and applying a specific correction module, DXO uses EXIF information to fine tunes these corrections based on f stop, focusing distance and focal length (for zoom lenses.)

So just because Leica is doing an auto correction based on a specific lens, does not mean it is getting the most out of each lens. After all it is guessing at the f stop and I don't think it can track the distance and put that into the EXIF without some kind of electronic pickup from the rangefinder. But you can fine tune this manually. And if the M to Sony E mount adapter can communicate the same lens information that a Leica body would have, then this information could be used the same way by any raw processor that ties into this information for lens correction.

Funny you mention that. I went out on Friday evening just with the M240 and 1.4/35 Summilux ASPH (away from all of this 'get the better image with an A7R crap) and today I've been out just with my new (40 year old) CL which just arrived yesterday and fitted it with a 1.5/50 C-Sonnar and BW400CN - what a joy :)

I have taken a number of images - how do I convert the ARW files to dng? Neither Lightroom nor Aperture recognise the files.

I have downloaded the Sony Play Memories program, but it doesn't seem to like me - okay, maybe that's the other way round ...

Okay, got it.

I have uploaded 10 ARW files to Drop Box - you can download them here, as a single compressed archive file.

The images were taken with the Sony A7R, with a Novoflex Leica M-Nex adapter (with the exception of the Nikkor shot, which was taken using a Nikon F mount to Nex adapter).

I'm sorry the images are a little boring - I don't have a brick wall, nor a basket of vegetables. In each case, all in camera adjustments were turned off (I think), ISO was set to 160, white balance was set to daylight, and the lens focused wide, then stopped down to f/4 (generally the sweet spot for Leica glass, according to Erwin Puts, anyway).

The ARW files were converted to 16 bit TIFFs using Image Capture (217 MB each ), then imported into LightRoom. I actually didn't do anything to the files, except export them as Jpegs for posting here. (The compressed Archive file in DropBox is the 10 ARW files).

Here is the image taken with my M9, with the same settings, on my Summilux 50 ASPH.

I'll be interested in your judgments - without pixel peeping, it's not as bad as some might say.

Cheers

John

First, the Zeiss Distagon 2.8/15mm T* ZM.

The colour shift and vignetting was so bad, I converted it to B&W using Nik SEP 2 so that you can still look for mushy edges and corners without being distracted by everything else.

Needless to say this won't be top of my list for use with the A7R. The Zeiss will stay with the Monochrom.

Summilux 35 ASPH (FLE) - a lens I and very keen to use with this camera.

There's some purple fringing, and all the wides have a little colour shift, but what I'm looking for is a distracting lack of detail in the corners - I don't see it.

Next is the Summilux 50 ASPH - things are obviously getting easier with the longer focal length.

Finally the APO Summicron 90/2 ASPH - again, no real cause for complaint.

(I also set the focus at infinity and stuck the camera over the rear fence, for those interested in performance at infinity - not something I think about much, I'd have to say. The image is in the compressed ARW file on DropBox)
