I found that the "Long Exposure NR(noise reduction)" and "High ISO NR" are "On" as the default in my A7R when delivered. I myself set them as "off" in the camera.

Thanks Thomas,

My A7r arrived on thursday and my adapter is arriving today, so i have been spending my time trying to see where all the different settings are within the camera menu. I will now look for those that you have specifically mentioned :)

Hi Ali,

Thanks, excellent points.

My experience with Nikon, Sony, and Olympus cameras, i.e. D800E, NEX-7, OM-D E-M1 is typically like this:

• A vendor supplied and vendor specific RAW Converter generally gives more faithful results IMHO.

• Unless it doesn't matter to me that much for a specific image, that's what I use.

• I switch off all sharpening and noise reduction at this stage - if not already done so in camera.

• I use 16 Bits/Channel and ProPhoto RGB and save the image as a TIFF file.

• Then I use CS6 and do all noise reduction and sharpening in Nik only.

For Leica M9 files I prefer to use C1Pro7 over ACR as the RAW Converter.

Hi Karl,

Thanks for sharing your workflow. I downloaded the sony software as well as updated my CS5 and other adobe bits and pieces last night in readiness. I will have another run through the camera menu and switch off as much as i can. Hopefully, i will have a couple of images to share later in the day :)

I agree with Thomas about the limited user manual. It could do with more depth.

Can someone sony versed talk to me about zebra settings? My hope was that it indicated highlight clipping, but I fear it's a video tool?

The Sony UK site as of last night, only had the downloaded manual in anything other than english

Ali,

What lenses have you available? (Sorry if this has been covered)

Hey,

I have the following;

50 lux asph

50 series 2 noctilux

28 elmarit asph

28 cron asph

75 cron asph

just taken my first couple of images with the 50lux. I cannot engage the zoom magnification as an error message appears saying that the lens is not attached properly

Right, here we go. I thought i would contribute something slightly different, as i could not bear for my first images out of the camera to be test charts or brick walls :-).

I thought i would take a couple of hand held shots at a wide open aperture and then another at sort of halfway, which is generally the range i use my 50lux asph in, to test the difference in image quality if any at the different shutter speeds.

The image f1.4 has a corresponding shutter speed of 1/2000th sec and the image at f5.6 is at 1/200th.

I turned off a much in camera stuff as possible and set ISO 50 as we have a moment of glorious winter sun.

To my eyes, i cannot see an discernible difference in sharpness when you view at 100%. The apple in the middle of the frame was my focus point, which should be obvious from the f1.4image. Although i had the peak focusing on, this did not really help as i could not engage the 'zoom' function to aid focus(?).

The dropbox link (fingers crossed) is;

please do let me know if the link does not open and what you think. Personally, i am more than happy with what i can see.

Apologies if I've missed them, but are there any 28mm Summicron ASPH shots up yet?

Very large thanks to all of you who have been posting photos and sharing the benefit of your experiences so far. It's hugely appreciated.

K.H. I think my files for M lenses on A7R should be recalled.

Please see waht in the link

In the reality, the sky is a little overcasted and the blue color distributes very evenly all around, but in the files no matter what aperture, the vignetting are so strong.

Then I check the shape of the adapter (Hawk Factory product) and compare it with the R adapter to find that the inner diameter of M adapter is smaller because the built-in helicoid. Therefore, what we see from the images can be attributed to the design of adapter. Hawk Factory adapter works fine on the APS-C sensor however no so on the FF sensor.

As I have only one adapter and I know you have some M-E adpater including Hawk Factory's and Novoflex? I suggest that you make comparison when your A7R arrive, if include Metabones' the better.

I will be off-line in the next 36 hours and will keep on investigate when come back.

I feel sorry to offer the files that may mislead your judgement.

There are many auto functions within A7R, reading thoroughly the manual could be imperative. In fact the manual is not detailed enough facilitating using the camera, Sony should elaborates more stuff about how to make best use of this camera.

Thomas,

I am not sure if there is a problem with the diameter of the Hawk's opening for the Leica M to NEX helicoid for the FF A7 and A7r cameras. It is definitely has a smaller diameter than my Novoflex Leica R to NEX adapter. The diameter opening for the Hawk's helicoid is about the same as my Phigment Leica M to NEX adapter. I am still waiting for my A7r to arrive for confirmation of this. But, I think that the diameter opening for the Leica R lenses is probably related to the diameter of the Leica R glass itself and quite possibly the distance from the sensor plane. Both K-H and I can confirm if there is a problem for the diameter of both the Hawk's helicoid and the Phigment adapter once we receive our A7r cameras.

I will say though that when I mounted my Minolta CLE MC 40mm f2.8 M-Rokkor lens with the Phigment adapter onto the Pre-production A-7r at PhotoPlus on October 24 I did not notice any vignetting on the camera screen at the rather close focusing distances but it was not something for which I was looking.

I cannot engage the zoom magnification as an error message appears saying that the lens is not attached properly

Which button is it assigned to? I set up 3 buttons that make it work on my body because it's one feature I use a lot. If you have it assigned to the AEL Button which I thin kid factory default then make sure you have the switch set to AEL (down) not AF/MF.

I think that's the problem you're having. The next thing is making the magnification last longer than 2 seconds which requires another dig in the menu.

I ended up with a lot of custom buttons for magnification, it helps depending on the orientation of your fingers.

It was user error on my part. The focusing zoom window is 'activated' with one depress of the the C1 button and the 'zoom in' is activated by pressing the same button again. I managed to find the magnification time adjustment and have it set to 5seconds. Having spent some time exploring the functions and handling, the magnification window when used, required some adjustment to what i thought was previously adequately focused.

Given that the pictures i posted are without the aid of the magnification zoom window, i am more than very pleased with the results.

Have you found where to set the in camera sharpening yet? i have looked through the menu's several times and it is not apparant to me

My A7R arrived yesterday - slapped on the Novoflex adapter and the 35 FLE to get a feel for the camera. It's nice in the hand, and largely intuitive.

Will try to work out today how to turn everything off, and to download the raw files (nothing in Adobe yet).

As the issue is the sensor with Leica wides, I propose to take some test shots for those of you still waiting, and for my own benefit. It will be a reasonably boring subject with texture over the entire from, using a tripod, and with all lenses set at f/4, auto everything turned off.

The lenses will be 15/2.8 Distagon ZM, 21 Summilux, 28 Summicron, 35 Summilux, 50 Summilux, Noctilux 0.95, 75 Summilux & 90 Summicron. I'll post a JPEG of each image with a link to the raw file.

Is there anything else people would like me to do? I'm taking my daughter sailing this morning, so I won't be able to post till this afternoon, so feel free to make requests or suggestions.

Cheers

John
